Part 1:Students will perform the following assignment:

(1) Select ANY twoindentedquote passages from Nagy’s book chapter that appeal to you and then (2) reflect if the hero / immortality experience depicted in Nagy’sindentedpassages can find points of contact with either (A) your own life or (B) with a person’s life who you happen to personally know… or perhaps a person you know from a film or book or from any form of contemporary media. In other words, draw on two of Nagy’sindentedpassages on immortality or imperishability(and also draw on Nagy’s surrounding interpretations of his indented passages) and create a response of approximately 250 words that reflects on points of contact between Nagy’s indented examples of immortality in ancient Greek culture and, on the other hand, similar examples from contemporary life,.. whether your own life or otherwise. But do use Nagy's language -- his quotes -- in order to enrich your own language about the role (or at least the potentiality) of "imperishable fame" in your own life or in another's life.

Part 2:Students will perform the following assignment:

Basing your response on what you personally think are the meanings of Nagy chapter reading for Module 3, and based on what you believe confers upon to an ancient Greek hero the quality of “imperishablefame,"kléos áphthiton, what do you imagine might confer upon toyou personallythe quality of imperishability? Use your own (best-ideal) life as an example. Anddo use Nagy's language -- his quotes -- in order to enrich your own language about the role (or at least the potentiality) of "imperishable fame" in your own life or in another's life.(Approximately 250 words).

The first indented quote I have chosen from the literary piece is “The Iliad's book IX emphasizes that Achilles had a choice to decide……...outweigh considerably his desire to obtain Nostos as well.” In this passage, Nagy says that Achilles was given a warning by his own mother not to go to the Trojan War, but his hunger to attain ‘Kleos’ i.e., glory, and also ‘Nostos’ meaning, heroes who returned after heroic deeds in the war, made him blind. Just like in life we do not want to give up on trying to earn more to live a good wealthy and comfortable life, to Achilles these were his wealth that he was not ready to give up upon. The second indented quote is “Even more remarkable is the fact that Achilles’ complete withdrawal………Odysseus that his imperishable glory lives on.”...
