Case Study 6: Learning from Our Neighbor to the North

Mr. Jackson has just returned from a professional conference held in Toronto, Canada. He is very excited to share a presentation he attended with his colleagues. The presentation was entitled, “Shifting Minds—A 21st-Century-Inspired Vision for Canada’s Public Education Systems.” Mr. Jackson had actually read about this initiative in his doctoral program at ICanDoThis University and was eager to discuss this initiative with Dr. Mak, his superintendent, and with Dr. DeLacey, director of curriculum.

The presentation Mr. Jackson attended covered the 7 C’s of 21st-century competencies that drive Canadian public school education. The 7 C’s were: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, character, culture, and ethical citizenship, and computer and digital technologies.

What impressed Mr. Jackson about this framework is that 5 of these 7 C’s were expanded upon and were subjected to a total redesign. The 5 components in the redesign were: curriculum, pedagogy, learning environment, governance, and citizen engagement.

If I were in-charge and given the responsibility of developing the cu
iculum I will integrate both the approaches of equity and culture in the pedagogy because Canada is a place where people from different cultural backgrounds are settling on rapid pace. The society is witnessing tremendous shift in their way of critical thinking, cultural development and education systems. It is necessary to strengthen the education systems in the light of diversity and inclusivity so that the differences can be respected and equal opportunities are available to children from minorities as well (Lilienthal, Matyo-Cepero, Messinger & Mims, 2018).
