Industry: Telecommunication
My Company: Telstra
Competitors:
1. Optus
2. TPG Telecom
1. Porter’s five forces analysis
The telecommunication industry is very competitive (Rugman 1992), but because most of the market share is with the key players and the top ones like Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom to name a few. Also the porter five forces analysis gives a clear picture of where is the industry positioned. Below is the porter’s five forces analysis of the telecommunication industry
· Bargaining Power of Supplie
The bargaining power of suppliers in telecommunication is ‘stable’ because the companies influence the supplier pricing, as the suppliers are few and the material which they supply is not used by any industry other than telecommunication. And with the dominant market share which Telstra has, it has a higher influence on the pricing of the inputs from suppliers because the company is also the biggest buyer in the industry
· Bargaining Power of Consume
‘Very Low, bargaining power of consumers in the telecommunication industry is very low as whatever price the telecom providers charge, they have to pay because there is no substitute for telecommunication
· Threat of New Entrant
‘Low’, the threat of new entrants in the telecommunication industry is low because of the high capital expenditure which must be incu
ed to get into this industry. Also, the government regulations do not allow every company to enter the industry, as there are many regulations in place
· Threat of Substitutes
The threat of substitutes is very low because the telecommunication product, which is marketed by the industry has no substitute, the only threat is international players, but because of the government regulations, not every player can enter the industry
· Rivalry among existing firms
The rivalry among the existing firms is very high in this industry because all the players are looking at the same pie which is not increasing and therefore there is a very high competition to take a significant portion of the pie, which is making the profit margin skim
Overall, the industry has the power to excel, as most of the key factors are in favour of the existing industry present, but because of the competitive rivalry to be very high, the companies cannot take full advantage of this.
2 PEST Analysis
2.1 Political Factors
Political factors affecting the firm are:
· Regulation in the telecommunication industry
· Pricing regulation – plays a very important role as this is regulated
· Bureaucracy and interference by the government
2.2. Economic Factors
Economic factors play a significant role in the success and downfall of a firm, and the same can be associated with Telstra, as the firm is operating in the telecommunication industry where the industry is highly dependent on the economic factors for success. Some factors which affect are:
·...
