Introduction
In nursing literature, nursing may be defined as a feeling of protection, preservation and enhancement of human dignity which includes concern, empathy and compassion for the patients (Nevada State College, 2020). It is a basic foundation of nursing practice.
During their treatment, the patients may experience stress due to their physically ill health, procedures, injuries and recovery. Caring helps the nurses develop collaborative relationship with patients and helps them in identifying the causes and symptoms while leading to proper diagnosis and treatment.
Section 1
According to nursing behaviors, the caring behaviors are the activities related to patient well being (Salimi & Azimpour, 2013). For example: Attentive listening, honesty, comforting, sensitivity and non judgmental acceptance. These behaviors are influenced by the perceptions of patients and nurses.
In the case study of Mr. A
as, several caring behaviors are identified. Nursing students were attentive in their listening during the handover process. They attentively noted down all the patient details like vital signs, ECG and saturation details. They also noted down all the medications which are to be given to the patient to prevent nausea and vomiting. Active listening during handover and history taking helps the nurses understand the patient’s condition and its impact over his health, in a better manner (Jahromi, Tabatabaee, Abdar & Rajabi, 2016). It avoids misunderstandings, improves relationship with patient and improves the productivity of clinical outcomes.
The students also observed the behaviors related to providing comfort. The students introduced Mr. A
as with their names, to make him familiar and comfortable in understanding them. They checked whether the patient’s hands have equal strength to omit out the possibility of any neurological insult.
They reflected sensitivity during their compassionate communication with the patient. They were sensitive towards the patient while checking the papillary response. While the patient was coordinating in eye movement during PEARL assessment, Shahn responded positively to the patient’s efforts by saying- ‘That’s perfect’. Throughout their communication, there was respect, acceptance and compassion.
There was non-judgmental acceptance of patient by the nursing students. The students ensured the patient has a peaceful environment at the emergency department by not talking to each other during the assessment. They were present around the patient, in the emergency ward whole time to attend him. These behavioral skills help the nurses in establishing bonding with the patients.
The students ensured comfort for the patient by calling him with his name. This behavior helps the nurses establish compassionate and caring relationship with the patient.
During the emergency care, Mr. A
as was provided committed and responsible care taking...
