Purpose
To encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration through the use of evidence-based practice studies.
Q1. Choose one of the main topics from the left column and then identify one study under that topic.
Read the study chosen and answer one of the topic questions listed below. Create a 2-3 page summary which supports the topic question. Provide a cu
ent research article (less than 5 years).
Response:
Topic: Malnutrition associated with specific health conditions
Study: Malnutrition in a sample of community-dwelling people with Parkinson's disease
Topic Question: What associations exist between nutritional status and health outcomes?
Response: Appropriate nutrition according to age is imperative for maintaining a healthy well-being and reducing the incidence and extent of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer etc. Recently, nutrition has been associated with mental health. Evidently, it has been co-related with several psychological and neurological issues such as depression. Malnutrition is a term given to decreased nutrition levels in children or adults which often result from intake of insufficient calories i.e. decreased protein intake or other forms of nutrition.
As stated earlier, nutrition has a contributory role to the general state of everyday life in subjects with neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Prevalence of malnutrition in patients with PD ranges from 3% to 60%. Such wider variation could be due to differences in methodology used, criteria of classification of...
