New public health approach and contemporary health challenges
Intent:To examine whether and how new public health approaches can be used in addressing health and broader social challenges.
Task details
Students will choose from a list of real-world communities that fit one of the following profiles:
1.An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community in a remote area
You should then do some research on the community - you can focus on one specific group. Then:
1.Present the burden of disease related to that health challenge
2.Consider the range of determinants for that situation and its disease burden
3.Discuss how new public health approaches may be applied in addressing that issue
Find data on your chosen community and explore a range of health-related challenges that they face, the burden of disease and the social determinants that underpin their situation. In your response, you should refer to the literature on new public health approaches that we have discussed in the subject and demonstrate a good critical understanding of how to apply them to your chosen health issue.
Your assignment should be inreport style. This means that you can use figures and tables (where appropriate), and subheadings. There is no need to include an abstract or contents page. If you do include figures or tables, make sure that you label them clearly and that they support your discussion (i.e. do not include tables that you do not discuss).

Report structure
Reports may have different structures, depending on the discipline and the context, but a fairly typical example is presented below:
ABSTRACT | Summarises each section of the report, including what research was conducted, what the results or findings were, and what recommendations were made. |
INTRODUCTION | - Introduces the topic and the context of the problem or situation.
- Describes your aims and objectives, and the scope or limitations of your investigation.
- May use sub-headings e.g. Background, Context, or Scope
|
METHOD | Explains how the research was conducted, using a step-by-step description. |
FINDINGS | Shows the results of the research study, often in the form of tables, graphs or charts. |
DISCUSSION | Explains what the results mean. This usually requires the researcher(s) to interpret the data and explain: - Why they think these results occurred
- What they think the results mean
- What implications these results might have for the situation being discussed.
|
CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS | - Briefly summarises the purpose of the research, the results and the findings.
- May include recommendations, or these may be included in a separate section.
