Identification of Young Gifted Children
Introduction
Children perform well in an environment that nurtures and supports their interests and abilities. Research suggests that due to the significance of providing talented and gifted children with appropriate stimulation and support to foster their learning process from an early age, there is a strong need that such students be identified as early as possible are (Rogers, 2011). This would enable nurturing the gifted children from an early age to reach their true potential. While most young gifted children would thrive and develop within the natural learning environment and level as other children, some gifted children tend to exhibit certain behavioural problems, such as being bored with learning. However, not all these characteristics are exclusive to children who are gifted, only that they tend to possess these to a higher degree than other students.
However, Wellisch and Brown (2012) show that not all features in identifying gifted students are necessarily positive. Some gifted students also tend to exhibit negative behaviours and characteristics such as cynicism, stu
ornness, emotional frustration, uncooperativeness, low attention span and interest in details or absent-mindedness (NSWDET, 2004, p. 8). Such characteristics may be attributed to underachievement, attachment difficulties and other...
