Assessment Introduction
This assignment requires you to prepare a manufacturing proposal to produce a component of the Deakin Ascend World Solar Challenge Car. Students should apply the knowledge they have gained through the unit to develop the solutions required from a Mechanical Design Engineer in a manufacturing environment.

The video below provide a detailed overview of the assessment, but please don't hesitate to confirm with your unit chair in the discussion board or online studios.
The surface bodies of each component are linked below. Your component matches the final number in your student ID number as per below:
Last number in ID

The entire body is seen in this file. It may help put your body panel into context to how it is positioned.
The component should include a minimum of four mounting points that should be as realistic as possible (based on research of cu
ent technologies and designs). The panel should deflect less than 20 mm with a 20 kg load applied normal to the surface in the middle of the panel. The production run for the parts is extremely low (4-6) so minimal capital expenditure should occur and be justified.
Assessment Requirements
The aim of this assessment task is to provide an innovative solution that incorporates flexible advanced materials and advanced processes, as well as considers The Circular Economy. The solution should be achievable and cost effective, with the goal of producing a report that would enable the manufacture of your components with minimal extra resources.
The report should include the following:
1. Selection of materials and processes with consideration of the Circular Economy and justification of material and process selection
· This must include a description of the internal structure of the material and a fundamental theory/mechanism based explanation of how the key material properties are suitable for this application.
2. Design and virtual build of the mould tooling required to produce the component.
· Use what you learnt from Assessment 2 - Design Proposal here.
3. A Process Flow chart for the proposed manufacturing processes with the realistic steps to manufacture the product
· This must focus on the production of the component and clearly highlight the steps involved, capital equipment, tooling, labour and the approximate time taken for each step of the process. This flow chart should only include key steps that are required in turning the incoming goods into the finished product (i.e. don’t include steps such as shipping or design).
Report Guide
Developing a proposal is not linear: all the work involved in the below sections should not be completed in order: there should be iterations and all things considered in parallel, as you will find constraints and limitations in some areas that dramatically affect other areas. Aim for approximately 2000 words.
It is highly recommended when writing the report to use the recommended template below to guide the structure your paper. Your report should be properly numbered and structured and include the following.
Title Page
Contents Page – Standard format
Introduction
· Background literature on the following:
· Materials and processes used in automotive manufacturing including constraints
· Overview of materials and manufacturing technologies that are a potential disruption to cu
ent methods
· Overview of the proposal
· Brief justification of proposal
Component Design and Manufacture (use diagrams to illustrate concepts, these must be original diagrams and not copied from elsewhere)
· Material selection and justification
· Basic proof that the design will be fit for purpose
· Process selection and justification
Mould/Tooling Design and Manufacture (use diagrams to illustrate concepts, these must be original diagrams and not copied from elsewhere)
· Mould/Tooling Material selection and justification
· Justification that the mould/tooling can cope with the pressures and temperatures during processing.
· Detailed description of the manufacture method (CAD/CAM, 3D printer guides)
Equipment Specification (use diagrams to illustrate concepts, these must be original diagrams and not copied from elsewhere)
· Process Flow Chart (PFC)
· Equipment selection and justification
Conclusions and Future Work
· Highlight the chance of success of the proposal, as well as where you think there are some limitations that need to be overcome with some future work.

Appendix
· Use the appendix to keep your report concise, keep important information in the main body of the report and refer to an appendix section for more detailed information that is less relevant to the reade
Assessment Criteria
Assessments should be uploaded either as Word docs or pdf’s or PowerPoint to the appropriate dropbox on CloudDeakin. DO NOT UPLOAD ANY OTHER FILES OTHER THAN YOUR REPORT.
The Ru
ic for this assignment can be found here.
The report must be written in the individuals own words. Do not copy and paste large paragraphs from literature straight into your paper, instead you are strongly encourage to paraphrase, i.e. re‐write the text in your own words. You must also clearly check the spelling and grammar of your own work. Any detected written work which has been poorly written, will be given a poor grade. A quick online guide on summarising, paraphrasing and quoting which you will find extremely useful, can be found in the following link:

Any references used should be cited using an approved style and avoiding plagiarism (see link below). This means you are expected to write the assignment in your words, and not use those of the references you find. Turnitin software will be used on all assignment submissions.
