property crimes and violent crimes.  To understand the type of crime it is very important to 
understand the intent of the perpetrator and the way the crime is committed. 
Definition of violent crime and property crime with an example  
A property crime is defined by the UCR as one where one person destroys or vandalizes or steals 
someone else’s property. This is a very common crime committed in the USA. Example : tearing  
a painting stolen from a house  
Violent crimes as defined by the UCR are those incidents where one person harms or attempts to 
harm someone else. These sorts of crimes involve force on the victim. Example: rape robbery or 
a killing.  
Robbery can be both a property and a violent crime. If robbery is breaking into someone’s house 
or burgling then it is a property crime.
