Element 1: Practical Demonstration
Each student will conduct a 10-minute consultation that demonstrates appropriate communication skills and qualities required for working in the area of Public Health. Choose a public health related scenario that will allow you to demonstrate effective communication skills in some depth, with a client who has attended for advice and support.
Do not use a script- it is important to focus on and respond to the client’s cues, in a person-centred manner.
Please refer to assignment marking criteria but some other useful tips include:
- show confident management of the session
- show attention to the client’s process, picking up on client cues and responding with appropriate skills and interventions.
- Move the client on by identifying strengths and possibilities.
- convey acceptance of client’s emotions and situation
- encourage the client to make their own choices rather than leading them
- finish with a summary that allows the client to see themselves and the situation more clearly and feel more able to move on.
Element 2: Reflective Account (1500 words, fully Harvard
Referenced).
· This element will provide opportunity to critically reflect on your
skills development whilst undertaking the module and preparing
for your demonstration.
· Your work needs to demonstrate an appropriate model (Gibbs) to guide reflection and demonstrate how you have developed whilst doing the module.
· Include and underpinning approach to helping (e.g., person-centred approach), and show how the relevant concepts, principles and skills are applied to the situation.
· It may help to think about including: the client’s process and needs, the skills to meet these needs, an explanation of why these skills are appropriate, appraising theory and evidence (e.g., building rapport, raising self-esteem, encouraging moving on, etc.).
· The reflective journal needs to show level 5 academic skills, and be adequately supported by sufficient appropriate references, including recommended key texts and relevant research from academic journals.
Finally, tutorial support is available for both elements within the module programme.
