ME311 Course project (122)
It is desired to design a system to keep a 1-million-galon capacity water tank filled. The plan is to use a centrifugal pump to fill the tank with chilly water (10 oC) ground water from an aquifer, which is 0.8 mi away from the tank and 150 ft lower than the tank. Estimated daily water use is 1.5 million gal/day. Filling time should not exceed 8 hr per day. The piping system should have four butterfly valves, ten 45oelbows and galvanized-iron pipe of a size to be selected in the design. The design should be economical both in capital and running cost expenses. Your design task is to select an economical pipe size and thickness and show which of the following solution will be more economical
  1. One pumping system is used at the beginning of the pipeline
  2. Two pumping systems are used. One at the beginning of the pipeline and the other in middle distance.

Note that the cost of installing each pumping system is $20,000, the initial cost of the pump is $50per each horse power (hp) and the operating cost of pumps is $10/hp.
You are required to write a report showing detailed calculations and graphs of HGL and TEL. The total piping and components cost should be obtained from the available manufactures in the market.
Notes for Students ?
The grades will be distributed as follow:
25% on the Presentation?
60% Technical Content and Details of the Analysis
15% Planning and Cost analysis ?
Additional 25% extra marks on the neatness and extended effort
Project Objectives
  1. To familiarize the student with the practical aspects involved in designing fluid systems
  2. Prepare young engineers through hands on experience in writing project technical report to execute tasks related to design practical fluid system.

Pump Station Project
SUMMARY
Pumping station is to be used for water supply to the households of city. It should be efficient ,
cost effective, easy to maintain and of course easy to install. In this project it is analyzed that
which one will be better among one pump system or two pump system. On the basis of cost
analysis and energy requirement of the project it is decide to use one pump system for the
water supply utility. Graphs for HGl are shown for the particular project and various parameters
of water flow in to the pipes are decided.
INTRODUCTION
In this project Centrifugal pump system is to be installed. Its parts and components plays very
important role in its efficiency so we need to take special precaution while choosing
components for the pump system. Here I am discussing various important parameters which
plays significant role in functioning of the whole system.
First we need to discuss about the type of pump we are going to use, that is Centrifugal Pump
System.
Centrifugal Pumps--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A centrifugal pump converts the input power to kinetic energy in the liquid by accelerating the
liquid by a revolving device which is called an impeller. Fluid enters the pump through the eye
of the impeller which rotates at high speed. The fluid is accelerated radially outward from the
pump chasing. A vacuum is created at the impellers eye that continuously draws more fluid into
the pump.
Design of Centrifugal Pumps
The energy created by the pump is kinetic energy according the Bernoulli Equation. The energy
transfe
ed to the liquid co
esponds to the velocity at the edge or vane tip of the impeller. The
faster the impeller revolves or the bigger the impeller is the higher will the velocity of the liquid
energy transfe
ed to the liquid be. This can be effectively explained with the help of continuity...
