(Lesson 25) The data for Exercises 1 through 3 are in the data set named Lesson 25 Exercise File 1 on the Web at http://www.pearsonhighered.com/greensalkindSPSS. The data are from the following research problem.
Marvin is interested in whether blonds, brunets, and redheads differ with respect to their extrovertedness. He randomly samples 18 men from his local college campus: six blonds, six brunets, and six redheads. He then administers a measure of social extroversion to each individual.

  1. Conduct a one-way ANOVA to investigate the relationship between hair color and social extroversion. Be sure to conduct appropriate post hoc tests. On the output, identify the following:
a. F ratio for the group effect
b. Sums of squares for the hair color effect
c. Mean for redheads
d. p value for the hair color effect
  1. What is the effect size for the overall effect of hair color on extroversion?
  2. Create a boxplot to display the differences among the distributions for the three hair color groups.

(Lesson 26) Exercises 5 through 8 are based on the following research problem. The data set for this problem is named Lesson 26 Exercise File 2 on the Web at http://www.pearsonhighered.com/ greensalkindSPSS.
Vicki was interested in how much time fathers of children with a disability play with their children. To address this question, she found 60 fathers in six categories:
  1. fathers with a boy with no physical or intellectual disability
  2. fathers with a girl with no physical or intellectual disability
  3. fathers with a boy with a physical disability
  4. fathers with a girl with a physical disability
  5. fathers with a boy with an intellectual disability
  6. fathers with a girl with an intellectual disability.

She asked fathers to record how many 10-minute segments per day they spent playing with their child for five days. The SPSS data file contains 60 cases and three variables, a factor indicating the disability status of the child, a factor indicating the child's gender, and a play time score averaged across the five days.
  1. Conduct a two-way ANOVA to evaluate differences among the groups, according to gender and disability status of the child, in the amount of time fathers spent playing with their children.
  2. Which follow-up procedures should you use? Why?
  3. Write a Results section reporting the results of the analysis.
  4. Create a box plot to show the distributions for the six groups.

One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a significant difference in level of extrovertedness by hair color. Three hair colors have been selected such as blonds,
unets, and redheads for this study. So this study examines whether blonds,
unets, and redheads differ with respect to their extrovertedness. Eighteen men have been randomly selected with 6 men represented for each category from his local college campus: six blonds, six
unets, and six redheads. Then a measure of social extroversion to each individual is administered.
Therefore, we are to test
H10: There is no significant difference in level of extrovertedness by hair color.
H1A: There is significant difference in level of extrovertedness by hair color.
The variable extrovertedness measures the social extroversion to each individual and it is a scale variable. The variable hair color measures the hair color of a individual and it is a nominal variable.

The descriptive table indicates that individuals have blond hair color have highest average extrovertedness score with highest variability. This is followed by
unette which have average at 3.67 with less variability. Individuals with redhead hair color have lowest extrovertedness score at 2.33. This reveals that extrovertedness score varies among individuals with different hair color.

Inferential Statistics
The results of the analysis of variance indicate there is no significant difference in extrovertedness by hair color, F(2, 15) = 3.51, p = 0.06 (see Table 2). The effect size is 0.32 which is moderate.
