Introduction
This case study will make a reflection and demonstrate the ways; the Retune to Practise Nurse (RTP) deliver care to a patient using core values of nursing, which are promote safe, effective, compassionate and care to deliver best care to a patient in one of the mental health hospitals as a return to practice student nurse (RTP). As part of the object of this essay, a return to practice nurse (RTP) will discuss how she applies person–centred, evidence-based care. The ways, RTP nurses work in partnership with the patient, using active support to deliver care, will enhance self-care abilities, including collaborative working with other professionals, families, and carers for the best interest of the patient.
In addition, RTP nurses will demonstrate the application of theory and strategies in sustaining health promotion, protection and prevention of ill health when caring for the patient with mental health conditions. Lastly, in this essay the confidentiality will be maintained when discussing patient, staff, and organisation this is to conform to (NMC, 2018) code and legal framework and clinical governance that aims to improve clinical practice and care.
Case Study of a Client
I have taken care of a patient who was suffering from Dementia. His name was Robert and he was 40 years old. He was suffering from acute memory loss, which was restricting him from performing his daily life activities. I have provided my care to this patient during my time of placement. I had to take care of his daily activities as he failed to perform those activities on his own. I had to provide him with all the necessary guidance, which he could not do himself because of his mental illness. I had looked after him for a very long span of time and learnt several practices.
Biological Description and Rationale for Aspect of Care
Description
Robert is a 40 years’ old man, who lives with his family. He did not have any major biological disorders in his life for a very long time. His health reports reveal that he has had Alzheimer's, which have resulted in acute dementia. Robert has been suffering from neuro diseases since his childhood. The problem in neurological diseases has been detected to be one of the prime causes for his dementia. The acute neurological disorders and problems in the
ain often lead to dementia.
Since dementia is an acute mental disorder and restricts a person from taking the co
ect decisions, I have chosen the aspect of care based on the Health Promotion Model. The health promotion model describes the multidimensional nature of the persons to understand the types of care they must be provided. Based on the Health Promotion Model, I have undertaken the behaviour-specific cognitions and affect care to provide to Robert.
Through this aspect, I can study the cognitive behaviours of Robert, identify the loopholes and make important decisions, which is better for his mental health. This entire aspect of care aims to provide mental guidance to Robert and
ing back the steady memory through rectifying his cognitive behaviours. The behaviour-specific cognitions aspect of care allows us to undertake several important decisions in healthcare, which is highly applicable to the case study of Robert.
Rationale
The rationale for choosing the aspect of care will be discussed elaborately. I have chosen the above-mentioned aspect of care because of the following reasons:
Involvement in Decisions
The behaviour-specific cognition aspect of care has allowed me to make important decisions for Robert. The health promotional model states that decisions-making is of the vital aspects of healthcare (Heneghan et al. 2019). To undertake the important decisions, the study of cognitive behaviour is essential. The chosen aspect of care allows in studying the cognitive behaviour of Robert. I can be able to understand the decisions, which are best for him through the undertaken aspect of care.
Support for Care
Another important reason for choosing the above-mentioned aspect of care is the reason for self-care. Dementia patients often fail to practice daily life activities and take care of themselves. The prime focus of treating dementia patients is to make the patients aware of undertaking self-care activities so that they can reduce dependency (Ahmad, Eckert and Teredesai, 2018). The above-mentioned aspect of care will provide a sense of independence to Robert.
Judging the cognitive behaviours of Robert, I will be able to teach him the importance of self-care. Once the drawbacks of the behavioural patterns are being identified; the patients could be taught to take the necessary steps to adopt the self-care procedures (Miotto et al. 2018). Therefore, it could be that the above-mentioned aspects of care have been undertaken to provide Robert lessons of self-care.
Emotional Support
The patients of dementia often require mental support. Since it is an acute case of mental pressure, the patients are often found undertaking i
ational decisions because of a lack of empathy and mental guidance. The behaviour-specific cognitions aspect of care allows to judge the mental state and support the patients in the times of vulnerability. I have undertaken the aspect of care to provide mental support to Robert by judging his behaviours and decisions. The chosen aspect of care has helped me to feed my care as per the requirement of the patient.
Health Promotion and Protection Theories as well as Approaches
There are several health promotion and protection theories and approaches. These theories and approaches can be beneficial and applicable in providing effective healthcare to the patents. The applicability of these theories will be studied concerning the case study of Robert. The theories and approaches that will be discussed in this section will help provide extensive care to Robert and understand his mental state in a better way. The understanding and applicability of the healthcare practice makes the care extensive and restricts further illness by directing in the right way.
Behavioural Approach
As the name suggests, this approach stresses on the behaviours of the patients. The behaviours of the patients are judged and decisions of the healthcare workers are taken based on those behaviours (Braithwaite, 2018). This approach is extremely applicable to the case study of Robert. As mentioned earlier, Robert is a patient of dementia. He has a huge tendency of forgetting this. This affects his behaviour a lot.
The behavioural i
egularities within Robert can be traced with the application of the behavioural approach. Broadly the behavioural approach can help any healthcare professionals to identify and determine the i
egularities or any insignificance within a person's regular behaviour. As the discussed approach talks about the basic standards of people's behaviour it sets the guidelines for the professionals. As Robert's behaviour does not fall under the category set by the behavioural approach it can be easily determined that there are some problems in his behaviour.
The behavioural approach helps to determine this ambiguity in Robert's behaviour. Hence this approach is very useful in effective identification of the basic problems and the useful treatments associated with it. This approach states that based on the patient's behaviours, the healthcare providers must undertake the necessary decisions (Braithwaite et al. 2017). Therefore, using this approach, I make the best decisions for Robert as per his behavioural demands.
Social Cognitive Theory
This theory states that the social or the environmental aspects of a person is often responsible for determining the health conditions of a patient (Heron et al. 2019). The environmental factors play an important role in determining the health conditions of the patients. This theory is also extremely applicable to the case...
