As a potential manager in health and social care organization, is imperative for Emmie to concentrate on her leadership abilities for her portfolio. In healthcare, there are several theories that mark the effectiveness of a leader and such theories are widely used as a major developmental tool for grooming good leaders or managers in the healthcare sector. These leaders play the role models for providing, high quality, safe and compassionate care to the patients. Their top priority is to emphasize that quality provided and to ensure that the choices of the patients are being heard properly. The focus is not the care and attention of the patients and using their feedback to build a proper environment. There are several leadership theories that should be studied and followed by Emmie. These will help in building her leadership abilities and offering a supportive, empathic, available, fair, compassionate respectful and empowering leadership. Emmie will promote involvement and participation and as her core leadership strategy.
Several qualities are needed in a leader such as:

Team leaders should create a sense of team belonging identity within the team inspiring an articulate and clear vision of the work. They should ensure that their team performance is reviewed on a regular basis and improved accordingly, and that there is a climate of positivity, optimism, efficacy, mutual supportiveness and good humor.
Some of the conclusive theories that Emmie should maintain about developing her leadership practices are described below. These have been the key conclusions from years of research over the last 80 years. These will help Emmie locate her understanding of leadership in social care and health care. Trait theory, leadership behaviors, leadership competencies, dyadic approaches, transformational leadership, and charismatic theories have been widely followed by leaders in healthcare industry.
Trait theory in Healthcare is widely considered as the best theory for developing leadership in individuals; this theory includes the core traits of a person in developing their leadership (Yukl, 2013). These core traits include:
High energy level and stress tolerance - Having high stamina over long periods is a mark of an effective leader. They must remain in equili
ium and calmness is necessary even in crisis or high pressure situations.
Self-confidence can be effective in situations and lead to efficacy. These leaders can deal with tough situations without avoiding them. However, excessive self-confidence can make them prone to wrong decisions.
Internal locus of control – The belief that what is happening around them is because of their work and not due to fate or certain unavoidable issues. Motivating others to believe in this fact is also key for a leader. Controlling events because of this is a mark of a good leader that leads to a co
ect course of action.
Emotional maturity - emotional maturity and proper intelligence in creates positive and optimistic environment without emotional outbursts, anger or miscommunication.
Personal integrity – There must be enough consistency between shared values and the behavior marked with personal integrity, honesty, transparency and shared trustworthiness among the members and the leader. A leader must follow what he preaches and must be an example to the others without keeping his self-interest out of the issue.
In another majorly approved theory about Leadership competencies (Boyatzis, 1982) the main aim has been the focus on the competencies of a leader related to hospitality effectiveness, and their motives, knowledge, skills, self-image and other specific behaviors. These are further subdivided into -
Technical competencies include knowledge about the healthcare practice and their organization, the strategy to be followed and the structure and processes of the medical practices. They help in gaining proper knowledge about the health care service being provided by each team member, new treatments and technologies that are coming up; this helps in forming a respect for the leader and the leader has many followers.
Conceptual skills include understanding the complex environments of their organisations, both- internal and external as well as the processing of the environments that help to make sense of it with proper analysis and planning. Leaders with good conceptual skills instill a confidence among the followers. Interpersonal skills are vital to understanding the needs and feelings of the members of the team (Kvist et al., 2013).
Emmie’s approach to the importance of leadership should be based on the open mindedness, originality of thought and creativity is necessary while tackling the complex problems of heath and well being improvement. Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills are needed to develop positive relationship with the participants while considering their own individual needs. Ethical and participatory relationships are also to be considered. Organizational skills like planning ahead to understand the exact necessities of the patient and keeping a record or journal or notes detailing each case is also important.
The leader’s main job is to overlook whether the services provided by her teammates can match the satisfaction of the patients. Handling the relationships with care and diplomacy is the key feature in maintaining the relationship between the patients and the healthcare providers. A leader must exhibit a minimum perseverance in pursuing their research objectives and the ability to manage failures and mistakes as an opportunity to learn and develop better strategies. To conduct her team efficiently, a good leader must be able to ask difficult questions without affecting the relationship with the patients. He or she must be considerate of their emotions and must be flexible and show initiative in being able to ask or gather sensitive information.
A good Leadership skill is about the teams and customer satisfaction. It is based on position power, problem-solving ability and to control the outcomes. It depends on commitment, persuasion power and keeping an open possibility for all problems. The mark of a good leader is effective delegation (Wong, Cummings & Ducharme, 2013). Handling responsibilities with competent authority helps in completing a task. Effective delegation helps to develop a more productive environment. Team leaders ensure that there is shared leadership in between the members and that they are fully involved in all the decision making appropriately with constructive debates to improve quality of patient care (McFadden, Henagan, & Gowen, 2009).
Balancing inquiry with advocacy and dealing with conflict constructively is the hallmark of a effective leader. Leadership theories suggest that the style of leadership arises from the situations that the manager is exposed to. It depends on how they handle a situation and how they deal with criticism that helps establish authority. Not everyone is expected to have the knowledge about all the services in a hospital.
