Assess opposing views of current polices and the implications from both sides.

Compose a document to employees addressing recent legal and ethical issues which may require changes in how an organization operates.

Differentiate between the demands of legal policies, ethical issues with relevance to the needs of the provider and patient.

Explain the value of various policies and procedures at the federal, state and local levels as they relate to the provision of healthcare and patient rights.

I have reviewed the course objectives. These objectives I know will assist in my success in management because I will be learning to listen to both sides of an issue. Being able to hear opposing sides allows one to be more objective plus it gives way for the facts to be presented. Being a good manager also means reviewing government policies, ethical issues, as well as considering the needs of the patient. Successful managers also know how to plan and implement procedures that support recent policy changes.

The risks or challenges a manager can encounter if they have not mastered these objectives, is managers could end up facing legal issues if they do not familiarize themselves with federal. State, and local laws that help regulate the healthcare industry.

The listed objectives are common roles and responsibilities that a healthcare administrator/manager should be capable of doing in order to be successful in one's position. It is our job to use our critical thinking skills and be able to evaluate contrasting opinions of existing policies and the consequences of both sides. As a manager our decisions are not based on preferences or biases but what is right by law and standard procedure. Constructing documentation that discusses recent legal and ethical problems that may require improvement is also important because a written document it is proof of the changes that are going to happen. It lets employees know what will be expected of them and they have the ability to reference it when needed. Only relying on oral communication may result in forgetting what was said or misinterpretation. As a healthcare professional it is our duty to provide service that is both legal and ethical. Legal standards are useful because they explain to patients what the providers are not allowed to do. When legal standards are in place, those rules must be enforced. Ethical standards on the other hand are based on an individual basis. Ethical standards are based on human principle of what’s right and wrong (Knorring, XXXXXXXXXXIt is also important as a leader to not only dictate recent policy changes but to have a plan on how to execute. Change requires time and it is impractical to think that everyone will be able to conform to the changes without any resistance or hesitation.

If a manager is not capable of accomplishing these objectives, they have not proven that they are capable of leading others. They also do not have the skills to help the organization grow.

First I would like to say that everyday that goes by, some where in this world facing healthcare it is always legal and ethical issues being faced or addressed. In the healthcare industry it is always issues dealing with hospital management, medical treatment, practices and other healthcare matters. Accomplishing the objectives in this course will support my success in management by not failing myself as leader, the healthcare organization I am in charge of and most importantly the patients. Patient legal and ethical issues include HIPPA, patient negligence, privacy, informed consent, discrimination, harassment, provider and patient confidentiality and access to care. The legal and ethical issues involved in healthcare are all on-going situations because it is always a provider or patient who is involved that is facing that two way street deciding who is right and who is wrong. As administration we would have to analyze and determine a plan of action right away. Overcoming many of the ethical issues today as administration we should speak up about these healthcare issues, keep our employees informed on issues and implement policies and procedures so that staff know the importance of showing respect to families and patients, truth-telling, transparency, privacy and exploitations. Management might face many risks and challenges if the objectives in this course is not mastered. The risks and challenges will be problems facing patient rights/safety/privacy, medical errors, neglecting policies and procedures. Some examples that lead to administration problems would be things such as record retention, not making modifications towards preventing falls and mobility, not communicating with patients/families/staff, missing patient appointments and not following up on them.
