Social media marketing in healthcare has its advantages and disadvantages. HIPAA complianceis one of the biggest challenges of social media in healthcare. Healthcare professionals are leery of entering into the social media fray for fear that they will compromise patient privacy, either through what they post or by exposing their networks to viruses or hacking.
Fortunately, HIPAA offers specific guidelines on how to safely post information, comments, photos, or videos online without violating patient privacy laws. These include “de-identification” of patients by removing or omitting names, insurance or Social Security numbers, date of birth, and photos and eliminating specific details of rare medical issues, including the dates they occur. Healthcare providers can also obtain consent from patients to post their photos on social media sites. What are your thoughts regarding HIPAA regarding social media and marketing?

The advantage of social media is that it allows for dialogue and feedback from the patient. It gets publicity for the organization and it shows that the organization is willing to evolve with the times. However, it can be a detriment due to patients' ability to contribute negative reviews. Due to the Consumer Review Fairness Act, the organization cannot create agreements restricting patients from submitting public negative reviews. Many have tried, but copyright laws and this act prevent the negative reviews from being stifled. This makes way for false negative and positive reviews.

The obvious advantage is being able to service patients in an efficient and quick manner. Using social media is also cost effective, plus it helps you build a better relationship with patients. Social media can be used to help educate patients on a variety of topics as well as, attract other professionals to join your organization. The obvious disadvantage would be issues of privacy. Another problem could be compliance issues and the risk of promoting false information, and finally, the lack of control once bad information gets out.
