The Adani Group is trying to build one of the biggest coal mines in the world. The Carmichael coal
mine is a proposed thermal coal mine in the north of the Galilee Basin in Central Queensland,
Australia. Mining is planned to be conducted by both open-cut and underground methods. The mine
is proposed by Adani Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of India's Adani Group. The project is set to

project is approved. Do you think there is a conflict of interest between income streams to the
government, and protecting the environment for future generations?
• Should the Australian government extinguish native title for the Adani coal mine?
• There are plans to dump the sediment from the black coal on the doorstep of the great ba

eef. Would you allow the project to continue in light of the environment impact statement?
• The contribution to ca
on emissions, impact on Aboriginal people, and the impact of water
pollution on the Great Ba

GENERAL NOTES FOR ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments should usually incorporate a formal introduction, main points and conclusion, and will be
fully referenced including a reference list.

The work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We
strongly recommend you to refer to the Academic Learning Skills materials available in the
Moodle. For details please click the link
http:
moodle.kent.edu.au/kentmoodle/course/view.php?id=5 and download the file “Harvard
Referencing Workbook”. Appropriate academic writing and referencing are inevitable academic
skills that you must develop and demonstrate.

We recommend a minimum of FIVE references, unless instructed differently by your lecturer. Unless

GENERAL NOTES FOR REFERENCING
High quality work must be fully referenced with in-text citations and a reference list at the end. We
ecommend you work with your Academic Learning Support (ALS) site
(http:

References are assessed for their quality. You should draw on quality academic sources, such as books,
chapters from edited books, journals etc. Your textbook can be used as a reference, but not the lecturer
notes. We want to see evidence that you are capable of conducting your own research. Also, in order to
help markers determine students’ understanding of the work they cite, all in-text references (not just
direct quotes) must include the specific page numbe
s if shown in the original. Before preparing your
assignment or own contribution, please review this ‘YouTube’ video by clicking on the following link:

You can search for peer-reviewed journal articles, which you can find in the online journal databases and
which can be accessed from the li
ary homepage. Wikipedia, online dictionaries and online
encyclopaedias are acceptable as a starting point to gain knowledge about a topic, but should not be
overused – these should constitute no more than 10% of your total list of references/sources. Additional
information and literature can be used where these are produced by legitimate sources, such as
government departments, research institutes such as the NHMRC, or international organisations such as
the World Health Organisation (WHO). Legitimate organisations and government departments produce
peer reviewed reports and articles and are therefore very useful and mostly very cu

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Carmichael coal mine is an assented thermal coal mine located in Queensland, Australia. Proposed by Adani Group, the company had initially had a total proposal amount of AU$16.5 billion as total amount required for investment. But as an external foreign investor into the country, many financiers and investor bodies have refused to provide finance for this proposal and as a result the company finally reduced the total amount to AU$2 billion which is fully funded by the company. The proposal also includes a rail line of 189 km to be included through which more coal can be exported to India. (statedevelopment.qld.gov.au)
The mine proposal has invited so many debates from Queensland Government authorities, the financial capacity and viability, the environmental defects and the subsidies provided by the government involved. As such the involved defect is on the Great Ba
ier Reef, ca
on emissions and ground water. As per the environmental impact disclosure, around the 60 years of life span of the mine, it can produce approximately 200 million tonnes of ca
on dioxide. (eisdocs.dsdip.qld.gov.au)
The proposal had to go through severe law procedures from environmental and local bodies as the gas and energy emissions would seriously affect the water, endangered species etc. Finally after the local and environmental politics battle, the Adani Group won the additional two environmental approval and cleared to start the work of one of the world’s largest mining proposal. (eisdocs.dsdip.qld.gov.au)
INTRODUCTION
The final approval of the GDEMP (Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems Management Plan) and Black-throated Finch Management Plan as part of Carmichael Project has helped the Adani Group commence the mining proposal activities in June 2019. Even after this, the Group has to keep getting regular approvals and clearance from the Queensland Government regarding the requirements of the environment. (livemint.com)
With the project beginning its operations, it is expected to employ around 1,500 to 7,000 direct and indirect jobs involving the construction sector jobs. In 2010, Adani Group had purchased Carmichael coal mine and A
ot Point port. The mining proposal involves the coal to produce 2.3 billion tonnes of coal during its life span with 10 million tonnes generated each year. As such, the coal will be transported to the A
ot port via a rail line. The coal operations are expected to begin in early period of 2021. (livemint.com)
With the Adani Group’s acceptance to protect the jeopardized species and manage ground water has convinced the Queensland Government to provide permission to begin the coal operations. Over the last 8 years, the local protest has compelled the company to downsize the amount of investment because the Government had canceled the subsidy plans. Even while they can commence work, they will have to continuously obtain permission and approvals from State and Federal Governments to distill coal and also enter into agreements regarding payments like royalty to meet the environmental regulations and policies. (eisdocs.dsdip.qld.gov.au)
1
INCOME TO STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS AND THE PROTECTION OF FUTURE GENERATIONS
Adani Group had to cut down on their initial investment plan of AU$16 billion to AU$ 2 billion which is also self funded as the Government had canceled plans of allotting them required subsidies for the extraction of coal. Apart from this Government had also strictly claimed to obtain approvals for environmental regulations clearance at each stage of coal extraction. As a part of this, royal payments have to be made to State and Federal Governments. Thus, right from the initial investment stage, there has been...
