Introduction
The main objectives of a counsellor or a healthcare professional lies in providing the best care to the clients by uplifting their mental strength by the means of therapeutic relationship and through active communication skills and positive gestures, which help them, feel more positive towards life. Sometimes there come such conflicting situations, out of the ethical issues related to the clients, where there is an utter confusion between the free will and the good will of the client.
As supported by Bager Charleson (2019), in order to work upon it effectively and make the client act accordingly, there is an ardent necessity of the counsellor to draw upon own feelings, experiences or personality. These will help to enhance the counselling process so that the client can get motivation from the same and handle their life’s problems accordingly while not resorting to any negative outcome. The counsellor’s utmost concern should be to prevent any upcoming harm upon anyone while maintaining the confidentiality of the talk.
Critically Analysing the Provided Statement
There is a necessity for the counsellors to build an effective rapport with their clients, acting as their friend during the therapeutic sessions while remaining utmost professional in such cases, as supported by Okoro and Adigwe (2018). The counsellors are the ones who identify any type of prevailing mental disorders in any client, which is difficult to detect normally as whether a person is actually going through any kind of mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, memory loss and cognitive impairment although he/she might seem to be quite fine.
As supported by Elliott, Bohart, Watson and Murphy (2018), in such cases, there is a necessity that the conversation, although professional, needs to be very informal like understanding their situations and showing care and empathy towards them. The counsellor always needs to be a very active listener of the client, even if he/she would keep repeating some things more often out of anxiety or any other reason, one should never show signs of i
itation show signs of care towards the patience and at any cost never lose patience or be judgemental. This can only be possible if the counsellors can actually put themselves into the shoes of their clients and think what the situation can be like from their perspectives (Flaskas & Perlesz, 2018).
As mentioned by Chege (2019), for uplifting the spirits of the clients, the counsellors need to tell them incidents from own life. Eventually, they need “use of self” for giving examples as to how they would stand up to their own expectations better and also deal with the problems they are struggling with at their present so that they can draw inspirations from other’s stories. The counsellor can give examples from their own life story, like how once upon a time they used to be a lonely person and used to stay depressed and how through self-motivation or by any other person, they thrived to struggle and achieve the position that they are in today.
The choice of whether or not apply “use of self” depends completely upon the counsellor as sometimes, being professional, a person might feel uncomfortable in sharing the true incidents from their own life. In such cases, as supported by Blanchard and Fa
er (2016), they can create a story of own life to inspire their fellow clients. This can motivate them, like themselves dealing with tough situations like their separation of their parents or...
