Assignment 1 – Home Automation Design Plan
In this assignment you will be scoping the requirements for a complete smart home solution.
You have a maximum budget of $150,000. You must make decisions that balance cost,
quality, usability, platform interoperability and end-user experience.
You will be using your own house as a case study and be looking to augment its existing
systems to make it smart. Note that Assignment 2 will build upon Assignment 1, so be
comprehensive and realistic with your proposal.
The purpose of this assignment is to expose you to different commercial home automation /
smart home technologies in an authentic scenario. By planning a realistic smart home, you
will get a sense of what is required, what technologies exist, their capabilities/shortcomings,
expense, and the cu
ent difficulties with integrating home automation software platforms.
Undertake independent research by viewing vendor sites, watching YouTube home
automation videos and asking salespeople at stores (e.g., Jaycar Electronics, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey
Norman, Good Guys, Bunnings, etc.).
Assignment Tasks
Create a floor plan of where you live (any open-source software will suffice). Your premises
must have a minimum of two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, laundry and
outside area (i.e., a garden/yard, balcony or patio). If your premises do not meet these
minimum requirements, then add additional fictitious rooms. Create eight (8) copies of your
floor plan to answer the questions below:
1. Network Infrastructure –
a. Label your 1st floor plan “Network Infrastructure” and outline the exact network
infrastructure your smart home will require. This includes the type of network
infrastructure (i.e., modem
outers, Wi-Fi mesh hubs, Zigbee hubs, Z-Wave hubs,
cat5/cat6 cabling, etc.), their location and coverage. Be sure to weigh up the
appropriate technologies with the smart home sensors/appliances you are trying to
support.
. Provide a budget
eakdown of the cost of your network infrastructure (including
installation costs if required). Your budget must reflect cu
ent commercial prices
with references to authoritative sources.
c. Provide a 500-word description of your network infrastructure to justify your choice
of equipment, technology, locations and coverage.
2. Electrical System –
a. Label your 2nd floor plan “Electrical System” and outline the exact electrical systems
your smart home will require. This includes the types of electrical outlets (i.e., smart
plugs, smart wall outlets, power monitoring/controls, solar panels/inverter, etc.), their
location and purpose. Be sure to weigh up the appropriate technologies with the
smart home sensors/appliances you are trying to support.
. Provide a budget
eakdown of the cost of your electrical system (including
installation costs if required). Your budget must reflect cu
ent commercial prices
with references to authoritative sources.
c. Provide a 500-word description of your electrical system to justify your choice of
equipment, technology, locations and purpose. Ensure that you are compliant with
Australian laws and standards.
3. Water Management System –
a. Label your 3rd floor plan “Water Management System” and outline the exact water
systems your smart home will require. This includes the type of water monitor (i.e.,
flow meter, hot water thermostat, garden i
igation timer, water quality sensors, etc.),
their location, coverage and purpose. Be sure to weigh up the appropriate
technologies with the smart home application you are trying to support.
. Provide a budget
eakdown of the cost of your water management system (including
installation costs if required). Your budget must reflect cu
ent commercial prices
with references to authoritative sources.
c. Provide a 500-word description of your water management system to justify your
choice of equipment, technology, locations, coverage and purpose.
4. Lighting System –
a. Label your 4th floor plan “Lighting System” and outline the lighting system your
smart home will support. This includes the type of lights (i.e., smart bulbs, LED strip
lights, downlights, etc.), their location and controls (i.e., smart light switches, buttons,
motion/light sensors, etc.). Be sure to weigh up the appropriate technologies with the
purpose and feel/mood you are trying to support.
. Provide a budget
eakdown of the cost of your lighting system (including installation
costs if required). Your budget must reflect cu
ent commercial prices with references
to authoritative sources.
c. Provide a 500-word description of your lighting system to justify your choice of
technology, locations, purpose and feel/mood.
5. Security and Safety –
a. Label your 5th floor plan “Security and Safety” and outline the exact security and
safety mechanisms your smart home will require. This includes the type of security
and safety (i.e., surveillance cameras, motion sensors, window/door sensors, smart
door locks, smoke alarms, air quality monitors, etc.), their location and coverage. Be
sure to weigh up the appropriate technologies with the smart home applications you
are trying to support.
. Provide a budget
eakdown of the cost of your security and safety mechanisms
(including installation costs if required). Your budget must reflect cu
ent
commercial prices with references to authoritative sources.
c. Provide a 500-word description of your security and safety mechanisms to justify
your choice of equipment, technology, locations and coverage. Ensure that you are
compliant with Australian laws and standards.
6. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) –
a. Label your 6th floor plan “HVAC” and outline the exact HVAC your smart home will
support. This includes the type of HVAC, their locations, controls and how they are
monitored. Be sure to weigh up the appropriate technologies with the smart home
HVAC goals you are trying to support.
