Special Occasion Speech Due: MONDAY OCTOBER 24TH

In two to three minutes, you will present a special occasion speech. The structure of this speech although shorter
than your last speech, will have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Transitions are optional. Make sure you
practice this speech until you are very comfortable with your presentation. Special occasion speeches are usually
given from the heart, so it should feel more natural. This should be fun, so you can be creative with it. You can of
course choose a more serious topic if you prefer.

An outline must be uploaded on CANVAS by MONDAY OCTOBER 24TH before class begins.

If you do research, you will need to have references included on your outline. A PowerPoint is not required, but if
you have one make sure you cite your sources.


Ideas for speech topics
1. Toast (Birthday toast, new baby toast, new job toast, anniversary toast).
2. Roast (Someone of great honor is insulted in a comedic way, all in good fun. The stories are outlandish
and usually not true).
3. Eulogy (A speech that praises someone that has died).
4. Accepting an award

6. Wedding speech (Maid of honor, best man, best friend, mother to daughter, father to daughter, man to
other, woman to sister, etc).
7. Introduction speech (Introducing another speaker and telling the audience about this person).

person you are focusing on getting the audience involved and excited about the event).
9. Retirement speech (Telling the audience about this retiree).
10. Independence Day Speech (The Independence Day of any country is a moment of pride and glory. On
this special occasion, rich tributes are paid to the freedom fighters who sacrificed).
11. Commemorative Speeches (Speeches formally recognize and honor a person, organization, or occasion.
Commemorative speeches can occur in a variety of circumstances, from cele
ating a coworker’s
etirement, to congratulating a friend for winning the lottery, to remembering a person who has just

INTRODUCTION:

Attention Getter: 24 years ago, a man who seemingly had no future, decided to enter a local golf
tournament. Little did we know, he would soon become a household name. Tonight, we gather
here to cele
ate the achievements of one of the greatest athletes of all-time.

Credibility Statement: I've known him for over 20 years and have watched his entire career
unfold.

Relevance to audience statement: His unusual techniques and unique personality have made a
deep impact throughout our culture, and for being an athlete, has developed one biggest cult
followings ever.

I. My relation
I remember the first time I saw him in 1996. I was only a kid, but I'll never forget how
entertaining he was to watch, as well as how much he made me laugh. Since then, I've made my
family watch all of his games on TV.

II. Background
Initially, he was not even supposed to be a golfer. He began as a hockey player, which he was
not so good at, especially considering that he's the only person in history to take his skates off
and try to stab somebody.

a. He found his true calling and made a pivot into the world of golf. As an example of his
altruism, his motivation for switching from hockey to golf was so that he could help financially
support his elderly grandmother, who was in danger of being evicted.

a. He first won a local golf tournament by a single stroke, which then earned him a spot
on the Pro Golf Tour. Since his professional debut, he's held the record for the longest drive ever,
at over 400 yards.

b. His unorthodox slapshot-swing has been imitated by other professional golfers.

III. He has never been short of entertaining during his career.

a. On one occasion, he was teamed with Bob Barker, the host of The Price is Right, for a

ity tournament. His temper got the best of him, and he ended up in a fist fight with Bob,
which he lost.

b. Despite his volatile temper, he remains America's favorite athlete of all-time.

CONCLUSION

Summary Statement: It's been 24 years since he's made his professional debut, and today marks
the anniversary of him wining his first championship, by beating Shooter McGavin on the 18th
hole and winning the Gold Jacket.

Audience Response Statement: So let's raise our glasses, in honor of the best, funniest and most
interesting people of all-time. Here's to you, Happy Gilmore.

WOW Statement: We will always be grateful for the way you made us laugh, and made us cry.

crime; we would work together to steal math test from our teacher so that we
could sell them to our classmates.


II. Although we never admitted it to each other, and we hung out with completely
different circles, everyone around us knew we were both crushing hard, but the
courage was never was mustered on either side, and we never admitted to each
other how we felt.

the end of that… but life had another plan for us.
