Scenario details
Swimwear Revival is a small clothing manufacturer, specializing in creating custom, one-of-a-kind
swimwear. They exclusively sell their product through their online store.
Swimwear Revival is run by a team of three staff members: Amanda, Bernice, and Clancy.
Amanda and Bernice work together to manufacture swimwear. Clancy manages orders, sales and delivery.
Team hours
Most of the time, team members work the following shifts:
Amanda works 6.5 hours on Mondays, Tuesdays;
Bernice works 6.5 hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and
Clancy works 2.5 hours every weekday.

Additionally, Amanda and Clancy share responsibility for managing the Swimwear Revival social media
presence, with Amanda working one extra hour in the evenings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and
Clancy doing the same on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Costs
Amanda and Bernice, as skilled manufacturing staff, cost $24 per hour to employ.
Clancy, a part-time employee, costs $32 per hour to employ.
All staff are also entitled to four weeks of paid annual leave, during which a casual replacement is required
at a cost of $36 per hour.
Fixed costs such as rent and insurance are $18000 per year, and utilities costs are $460 per month.
Task 1 - Costs of operating the business
Using Excel, create a spreadsheet called operating_costs.xlsx that calculates the projected annual outgoing
costs of running Swimwear Revival.
Your spreadsheet should be configured such that the working hours, hourly rates, and fixed and utility costs
can be varied easily.
Document your findings in your report (approximately 100 words).
Manufacturing swimwea
Swimwear Revival receive requests through their online store, and Clancy responds with a quote, afte
consulting with a member of the manufacturing team. If the customer confirms their order, Amanda and
Bernice manufacture the ordered products, and Clancy organizes delivery.
Cu
ently, the process for generating a quote is entirely subjective, based on the requested material and
swimwear size. Staff members quote an amount based on their personal experience.
For several months, staff have been keeping track of the quote date, material, size, quote amount, and
manufacturing cost for each order in a spreadsheet. As each product is hand-made, the manufacturing
cost may vary between similar orders.
If a quote was not accepted by the customer, then manufacturing cost is not included.
This spreadsheet is available for download on Moodle.
Task 2 - Order information
Using Excel, process the history of orders spreadsheet and use appropriate charts to visualize:
How some aspect of quoting or manufacturing has changed over time; and
How the quote amount differed for each staff member.
You will need to find a way to use Excel to associate each quote with a staff member.
Describe your approach and your findings in your report (approximately XXXXXXXXXXwords).

Task 3 - Price consistency
Using Excel, analyse the historical data you have available, and create a spreadsheet that allows a membe
of the Swimwear Revival team to enter the swimwear material and size, and gives a quote amount.
Ensure that you include enough text and formatting to make your spreadsheet usable by a member of the
Swimwear Revival team (or by a University lecturer).
You may base your quote amount either on historical averages, or to ensure that Swimwear Revival makes
a profit.
Validate your quoting approach by applying your formula to historical data.
Justify your approach in your report (approximately 150 words).
Process improvement
The team want to improve their quoting process to reduce time spent waiting for customers to approve
quotes.
They would like to start manufacturing immediately for orders that they might be able to sell in future,
even if the customer does not go ahead with the order.
That is, they would like to change to the processes indicated in the following swimlane diagrams:

Task 4 - Process improvement
Extend your spreadsheet page from task 3 to automate the above processes, allowing a member of the
team to enter the swimwear material and size, and in addition to the quote amount indicate whether to
start manufacturing immediately.
It is up to you do determine how to determine which items are popular.
Justify your approach in your report (approximately 150 words).

        Assignment
        Swimwear Revival
Task 1 - Costs of operating the business
The target company ‘Swimwear Revival’ deals in manufacturing and sales of customized garments for swimwear. It uses e-commerce platform for sales and uses online portal for all types of dealings. The employees Amanda, Bernice and Clancy are responsible for all major tasks to run the company. In task 1, ‘Operating Costs’ sheet records the employees’ working hours, hourly rates and monthly costs. These details are used to calculate the monthly costs as well as annual costs on each employee incu
ed by the company. Certain overhead costs in running the company are further considered such as rent, insurance and utilities. These values are considered in the total operating cost of the company but these values are variable. The worksheet is designed where additional staff or other overhead costs may be added when required. Since, more employees can be added or removed from the record, the casual replacements may be appended to the same list, in case a permanent employee goes for annual leave.
Screenshot: Operating Costs
Task 2 – Order Information
The cost proposed to the customer for a particular order is refe
ed as quote price. It may also be refe
ed as the price paid by the customer after delivery. The factors on which a quote price depends are the price offered by a person as a company representative, the cloth material and prefe
ed garment size. The employee generates the quote price during his/her working hours. The worksheet ‘Order Information’ shows the quote prices and the manufacturing prices which are calculated on the basis of average sales. They are depicted in line chart. The quote price chart has increased in a consistent manner over time. It shows the maximum quote reached to $395.45 from $113.03 with an average of $136.59 over the weeks. The line chart of manufacturing costs does not show much variation. Therefore, it is conclusive tat the profit margins of the company have increased over the weeks.
The second major aspect of manufacturing garments is seen on the basis of fa
ic of the items manufactured. The quote price of products made in wool and leather has substantially increased while that of cotton fa
ic products has decreased.
The third chart depicts the quote prices quoted by Bernice and Amanda. It clearly shows that the price quoted by Amanda were higher than those quoted by Bernice with the manufacturing cost remaining almost the same. Thus, it is evident that Amanda reaped better profit for the company as compared to Bernice, considering the time and resources remain same.

Task 3 – Price consistency
The ‘Price Consistency’ sheet is created to record pre-defined quote prices of garments for a particular material and a particular size. This work sheet collects the historic data from the sheet ‘Sheet 1’ and generates the quote price on the basis of the customers feedback. It calculates the quote price by evaluating average price over time. The sheet ‘Price Consistency’ evaluates the data according to the values input in the green cells. These values in the green cells are variable.
This sheet eliminates the inconsistency in the quote prices given by different employees for the same product as seen in the previous work sheets. Although company profit ascended with those prices, but it would create discontentment among the customers who would get different price for the same product. This sheet spontaneously generates consistent quote price for the employees to offer to their customers and will help customers to keep coming back with more orders for the company thus maintaining relationship with customers for a longer period.
Screenshot: Price Consistency
Task 4 – Process Improvement
The process of swimwear garment manufacturing is a time-consuming process. When there is a consistent inflow of orders, it may become difficult to meet the manufacture deadline and delivery dates. This may create a bottleneck. This may be resolved if the company manufactures certain products in bulk which are in demand and keeps them ready for delivery. This will help the employees to use the company resources in a more effective way, meet the delivery deadline and further improve the quality of the product. This idea is accomplished through the numbers recorded in ‘Process Improvement’ Sheet. It shows which items should be manufactured before-hand according to the sales numbers recorded in ‘Sheet 1’. If the count of the item x is more than the average count of all the terms, then x should be considered for pre-manufacturing. The sheet ‘Process Improvement’ evaluates the numbers from the input values in the green cell.
