Introduction

The Board of Director of a national healthcare system is considering which electronic health record (EHR) system to use and how to implement the EHR in all of its facilities. As a health care IT consultant, the student will work with various team members at the corporate level to gather information and analyze the efficacy, safety, security, and legal factors, as well as the cost effectiveness, cost-benefit factors of two possible new systems to help them decide whether or not to implement one of them. The student will also recommend a high level implementation plan that considers system cutover and change management.
This is a very “real world” scenario facing organizations of all sizes. The need to make sound fiscal decisions regarding acquisition options; which products to invest in; and how best to implement these technologies and systems once purchased. None of these are easy decisions, which will become abundantly clear as students’ progress through the scenario gathering relevant information from key stakeholders. Issues related to cutover will be presented in the scenario and will definitely need to be taken into consideration when making recommendation to the leadership.
