INSTRUCTIONS:

You are required to read the case study and answer the question that follow.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATION

You are the department manager. You are thinking about having an end-of-year Christmas celebration to acknowledge your team’s hard efforts and contributions.

You have only just taken over the department, so you have not been fully acquainted with every staff member in the team. Having an informal get together will be a good way to get to know everyone better before the new year.

Your team consists of a mixture of people from all sorts of backgrounds, including Ahmed, Patty and Marco. Ahmed is Muslim and does not eat pork; Patty has flexible work arrangements and, if she’s not working from home, she leaves earlier than everyone else so she can pick up her daughter from childcare; Marco requires the assistance of a wheelchair.

In collaboration with the team supervisor, you have come up with a range of celebration ideas that could be fun for the team. You have narrowed the suggestions to the following three options:

• Indoor rock climbing wall

• Having a barbecue at the city park

• Hiring a room at one of the local bars for some team drinks.

You need to ensure that the event accommodates everyone’s needs.

Answer 1
The potential issue of the indoor rock climbing wall is related to Marco as he would not be able to engage in this activity. Since he requires wheelchair assistance, he cannot climb the wall (DelGrande et al., 2019). The potential issue of having a ba
ecue at the city park is associated with Ahmed, who is Muslim. As pork is considered a fo
idden food in Islam, Ahmed cannot consume ba
ecue that contains pork (van Es, 2020). Moreover, the potential issue of hiring a room at local bars for some team drinks is associated with Patty. As Patty picks up her daughter from childcare, she would not be able to engage in team drinks as she would not be able to pick up her daughter on time from childcare after team drinks. The drinks at the bar may reduce her
ain's functioning. This can significantly impair her potential to drive safely.

Answer 2
A diverse approach will be required to approach the individual needs of Ahmed, Marco, and Patty. In the case of Ahmed, the pork in the ba
ecue can be replaced with tofu, or a ba
ecue without pork can be prepared separately for Ahmed (van Es, 2020). In the case of Marco, specialized equipment and ropes can help him participate in indoor rock climbing (DelGrande et al., 2019). Furthermore, in the case of Patty, some soft drinks can be made available to her so that she can pick up her daughter in a timely and safe manner.
