Instructions

Assignments are to be done individually. Assignments are to be submitted and received on Turnitin no later than 11pm on Friday the 15th of May. Late assignments will be penalized by 10% per day late.

You are to write a report of no more than three pages in length for the body (Executive Summary to Conclusion), plus supplementary material in any appendices (which can be as many pages as you need). You do not need a title page for the project proposal.

Background

You are working for a company that specialises in water treatment systems. Representatives of a small South Australian community have hired your company to solve a water treatment issues. The community is in need of additional water, but has thankfully found a potential water source that provides 2000L per day. However, after testing, it was determined that it had a number of contaminants as follows;

Aluminium (acid-soluable): 18mg/L

Ammonia: 15mg/L

Sulfates: 2200mg/L

Sodium: 250mg/L

Coliphages: 1,000 cells per 100mL

Escherichia coli: 20,000 cells per 100mL

BOD5: 100mg/L

Suspended particles of sand with minimum diameter of 0.1mm

The community has an unused packed bed air stripper with 5 transfer units of 1 metre in height and 1 metre in diameter. It has no packing material anymore. The community also has large open space for both a trickling filter and grit chamber

Your Task

You have been asked to assess the suitability of refurbishing the exiting air stripper to determine to what extent it could treat the contaminants in the new water supply (you will obviously need new packing material, the size and type is up to you).

You are also to undertake preliminary designs for a “reasonably” sized trickling filter and a grit chamber to treat “whatever can be treated to make the water safe according to relevant standards”.

Also provide discussion on additional requirements and systems (if any) for treatment of the water to meet relevant standards. (That is, if the packed bed air stripper, trickling filter and grit chamber don’t treat everything, what is left and what could be used to treat the residual contaminants).

Report information

Remember that you are writing a project proposal for the community. Generally, these are intelligent people and understand scientific principals, but not are all scientifically trained. You should have the following sections in the report:

Executive Summary

Introduction (This is where you introduce the problems/opportunities)

Methodology / Background (Background of the system and how it is designed)

Results (Designs)

Discussion / Recommendations (Justified)

Conclusion (Tying in the problem and the recommendations)

Appendices (Supplementary material, including any calculations, in a format that makes sense and isn’t just a bunch of equations and numbers).

The mark weighting will be 50% on the calculations and 50% on the report writing. Only the first three pages of the report body will be read and marked. The same rubric as for Assignment 1 will be applied to Assignment 2.

Summary
In order to satisfy the additional water needs of the community, various water treatment systems
were designed and suggested to make the water from the new potential source safe according to
Australian Drinking Water Guidelines 6 proposed by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
of southern Australia (SA).
Introduction
Water is essential for life, and an adequate, safe and accessible supply must be available to every
eing. In order to ensure safe drinking water, World Health Organization (WHO) provides
ecommendations and guidelines with an intention to protection of public health and the aesthetic
qualities of water. In South Australia, EPA or Environment Protection (Water Quality) Policy
2015 provides a legislative and authoritative framework for good management of supplies of
drinking water appropriate for local conditions. Even though the primary use of water is for
human consumption but it is also used for other purposes like maintenance of aquatic ecosystems
and for various application in primary industries. All drinking water service providers in South
Australia must comply with these guidelines which have been developed after consideration of
the best available scientific evidence.
It becomes very important to provide access to safe drinking-water especially for small
community in any region to improve the community’s health. The community has successfully
found a potential water source to cater its additional water need but however after testing, we
have found that it had a number of contaminants that makes it unsafe for human consumption
according to EPA guidelines.
Methodology / Background
The following table summarizes the concentration of contaminants found in available water
source and allowed by the guidelines and the problems caused by these contaminants.
Contaminants Testing Result Guidelines [1]
(should not exceed)
Problems
Ammonia 15mg/L 0.5 mg/L Co
osion of copper
pipes and fittings
Sulfates 2200mg/L 250 mg/L Taste, purgative effect
above 500 mg/L
Sodium 250mg/L 180 mg/L Taste
Coliphages 1,000 cells per 100mL Should not be
detected in any
100mL sample of
drinking water
Indication of fecal

Escherichia coli 20,000 cells per
100mL
BOD5 100mg/L 8 mg/L
