Problem in Nigeria with Food waste
Food waste is one of the growing problem in Nigeria,Despite of all the necessary efforts by the
government and United Nations the problem of food waste is still rampant there and millions of
people are still getting hungry.A survey suggested that there is more food getting wasted in
developed countries than developing countries but when there is a point where the impact need
to be accessed ,lost food is more worse in countries like Nigeria where lack of infrastructure and
energy completely wipes out crops,bankrupts the farmers and steal the food from needy.
According to the International food policy and research institute,every year in nigeria 123 million
metric tons of food getting waste and never reach out to consumers because African heat
damages it all before getting these into Market.
Food is one of the basic of human survival need ,however lot of measures has been taken up
globally to improve the quality of food across the world but food insecurity is still a concern fo
all.In malnutrition that resulted in nigeria death of many citizens.African food security reports
that approximately one out of every three persons in africa is not nourished.To achieve the goal
of sustainable development across in nigeria it will be a illusion without healthy and nourised
people.Food waste problem in nigeria also resulted into various global issues like civil unrest
and riots,population growth ,surge in demand,land and water issue for climate change.

consumption and this was mainly due to fresh production needs to be refrigerated soon afte
harvest and these fresh produce were basically fruits and vegetables .fresh produce production
has certain challenges than other agricultural products but its main key is these are very
perishable
Major issue with fresh produce food in nigeria is that there is very less processing also with less
storage solutions,that need to be refrigerated but there is lack of electricity across for most of
the produce resulted perish in food.also there is a problem in move these production quickly
from farms to supermarkets or hotels or airports due to poor infrastructure of road
Taking in consideration,nigeria had five times more land than kenya but kenya earned a billion
dollars in fresh production and nigeria struggled to get an revenue of ten million dollars even
annually,major reason behind this is lack of storage,poor infrastructure ,also government
policies are needed to regulate all these tasks ,Also the food production in nigeria will perish by
contributing to different factors such as electricity,road,good seeds,good education and
government policies around
How Could you prevent Food waste
Food waste is one of the main serious issue apart of the people realize,approximately one third
of the total food produce in the world is discarded and getting waste for many reasons,that is
approximately 1.3 billion tons of every year.A study says that 80 percent of food was wasted in
nigeria,however 33 % was wasted in the world .different scientific and agricultural institutes in
nigeria focused on how to preserve beans,grains and other food crops for many years without
the use of synthetic fertilizers,also the post harvest loss could be saved by effective utilization of
supply chain management and value chain supported by internal research,in house
development and backed by financial investments.
There are losses that occurs at the time of harvest,storage ,transportation and production,so
there is need to closely monitor the different processes and suggests step at different stages
It is clearly addressed in past that food loss and food waste is related to sustainability,which
calls for per capita global food waste at different levels as retail and consumer level and food

production in solar powered cold rooms,also there are local rent walk in cold rooms where one
can store fruits and vegetables and other perishable food which will be aging the life to 21 extra
