Difference between Leadership and Management
Introduction to Leadership and Management
Leadership is concerned with motivating a group of people to move in a particular direction. The leaders try to direct themselves towards achieving a common goal. As mentioned by Hughes, Lee, Tian, Newman & Legood (2018), leaders help themselves and the team members ca
y out the activities effectively and efficiently and contribute to meeting the organisation's needs.
Management is a process of getting things done through others and having them do it willingly. It includes a set of activities needed to accomplish organisational goals. It is the art of managing, handling, directing and controlling the activities of the organisation. It is an intangible force, continuous process and goal-oriented. It is the quality of ruling and a completely formal process.
Differences
Leadership is a skill of leading people, whereas management is concerned with administrating and coordinating things in a systematic way. Leadership is based on trust, whereas the basis of management includes control. The focus of leadership is inspiring people and the focus of management is managing the activities of the organisation. Leadership encourages change by making people move towards that direction, whereas management helps in
inging stability.
Leadership needs good foresightedness, whereas management usually has a short-range perspective. Leadership is a proactive strategy and management is a reactive strategy. Management establishes a complete balance of men, money, material, machines and methods. As suggested by Abasilim, Eyo and Akande (2019), leadership persuades people in the right direction for digging out talent in them. In leadership, guidelines and principles are established, whereas, in management, procedures and policies are implemented.
An organisation needs both leadership and management for growth and survival. The two are inseparable in nature. The managers are superiors who have different teams to get the work done. Teams have leaders to see that activities are properly aligned with the organisations vision and goals. The leaders cope with changes, whereas the manager manages with complexity. Leadership involves motivating and inspiring people, whereas management is concerned with administering and controlling activities and human resources. Leadership involves changing teams to achieve goals, whereas management involves reporting status up and down and to peers.
Hence, the outcome of leadership is operational effectiveness and doing the things right, whereas management outcome is organisational agility and doing the right thing. Leadership focus on goals, take risks, fosters trust, inspires people, mobilise resources and accomplish goals, whereas management focus on tasks, communicate what needs to be done, gives instructions, minimise risks, approve and control the activities. This is how management and leadership differ from one another.
Four Leadership Styles
As informed by Fiaz, Su and Saqib (2017), a leadership style tells how leaders treat their group members, the extent to which team members are given freedom and the ways; communication is done.
Autocratic Leadership Style
This style of leadership demonstrates bossism. A leader themselves make the decision and centralises power. They give orders and assign tasks i
espective of the employee's consent. It is based on the ca
ot and stick approach and thus employees produce the minimum, which will save them for punishment.
As informed by Dyczkowska and Dyczkowski (2019), the leader believes...
