Introduction
Early years of education is foundation phase of children. Development of proficiency of subject is laid down at this age only. There are many approaches used in classroom to teach the children. This essay deals with the role of the learning-centred classroom approach to develop the five strands of mathematical proficiency for foundation phase children.
Children Learning Mathematics in Foundation Phase
Foundation phase include very young age of children, between age 3 and 7. During this phase, children are deal carefully to teach them any subject and math is not an exception. As suggested by Papadakis, Kalogiannakis and Zaranis (2017), teachers used different innovative methods to teach children mathematics. The most common way is use of manipulatives and linking to the prior knowledge. Manipulatives are physical objects that are used as teaching tools to help children at foundation phase to learn mathematics. They are used to introduce the concept of the chapter and to make them practice math. Teachers of children at foundation phase traditionally begin with using practical material. They link the math with prior knowledge to help them practice. They use everyday objects or apparatus made specifically for teaching mathematics as the manipulatives. These manipulatives are also known as concrete objects. Materials are used for children with 2 to 4 years of age. For 5 to 7 years of age references are used which include a
ays and number lines.
Vygotsky and Piaget have given the theory on child’s learning. As suggested by Montealegre (2016), childhood learning and educational development are explained very nicely by these two theorists. According to Piaget’s theory, childhood cognitive development is dependent on mental model construct by a child about the world. Environment around the child influenced the development and understanding of the child. This is the reason that manipulatives are used to develop the understand about the concept of math in child. The Intelligence Quotient (IQ) level of child is determined by on how well they solve problems, spell and count. He concluded that children are born with a basic genetic or inherited mental structure.
On the other hand, Vygotsky’s theory stated that social interaction came before development and consciousness was the product of social behaviour. He found that early age use communication skills such as speaking and writing to develop high thinking skills. According to Bridge (2018), he concluded that adult, teacher and mentors shape the thinking skill with their input. This theory encourages active learning of child. He further concluded language is a key for unlocking cognitive thinking.
Learner-Centred Classroom
Learner-centred classroom is a setup in which students and teachers are equally the focus of education. In this knowledge is discovered by learners. The role of teacher is to make learner active. Teachers design the learning task and teach them. As mentioned by Schweisfurth (2015), strategies are laid down to ensure that classroom environment remain learner friendly. This method is also known as student-centred method. In this control of the classroom is equally shared between teacher and learner. The aim of setting of this type of classroom is to develop decision-making capability in learners. In this competency of learners are checked and experience of teacher are shared. The method used to learn is play way and joyful. The cu
iculum used in this type of classroom is developmental. Students are evaluated based on their activity-based formatives. The disciplined present in the classroom is shared and participatory. Teachers and students equally participate in learning process.
Learning-Centred Classroom
Learning-centred classroom are setup where students are the focus of the education. As suggested by Watkins (2017), in this approach knowledge is constructed by the learner. The role of the teacher is to facilitate the learning and role of learner is to act. Teacher...
