relates to the expenditures of taxpayer monies. One of the most hotly contested 
areas is that of the privatization of prisons. Respond to the following

Many of the sociologists assess the development of a society based on its treatment of the 
prisoners. Usually, every state spends a huge sum of money on prisoners. On an average, it is 
considered that around 60 billion dollar is spent on building, maintaining, and operating prisons 
in the US every year. This huge sum of money is collected from people as tax and spent on 
prisoners without any direct benefit to the tax payers. Are we able to keep our criminal justice 
system at its best? I think most of the Americans say no to this question. This is because most of 
prisons are overcrowded. Each year government spends $25,000-$40,000 on every prisoner. It 
means, if we want to keep our prisons at its best, government needs to spend more money on 
each inmate. Is there any alternative for this? Can we use privatisation to reduce cost and 
overcrowding? If we allow private firms to take over, we can reduce cost and exempt tax payers 
from huge expenses they incur year after year. In turn, it allows government to better use their 
revenue to service development activities. Another advantage to the privatisation of prison 
management is the flexibility with which they can act. This flexibility will bring in more 
innovation in prison management.
