Introduction
"Racism is rapidly being recognised as a major contributor to health inequities on a global scale. Although the literature in Australia is relatively restricted, extant findings reflect worldwide patterns. There is a health disparity in Australia between Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. Despite efforts to close the gap, inequalities in health persist. The purpose of this scoping study is to investigate, analyse and synthesise the impact of racism and discrimination on the physical and mental health of Aboriginal Australians."
Definitions
Discrimination
Discrimination is the unfair and inequitable treatment of people based on their race, ethnicity, or gender (Kairuz, Casanelia, Bennett-Brook, Coombes & Yadav, 2021).
Racism
Racism is defined by Berman and Paradies (2010) as the manifestation of racist beliefs, racist emotions, racist behaviours and racist practises that sustain or increase disparity of opportunity among ethnic-racial groups. Racism has both direct and indirect health consequences, according to research (Markwick, Ansari, Clinch & McNeil, 2019).
Racism in Mentioned Piece of Media
Some individuals mistakenly believe that uttering racial insults is amusing, or that racist terms are slang. Racism in Australia is sometimes disguised as "la
ikinism," and Australians are openly racist (Markwick et al., 2019). According to Priscilla Brice, managing director of anti-racist organisation All Together Now, “We need to move away from the usual Australian attitude of denying racism.” One does not have to be a bigot to be racist. It is racist if they make racially insensitive statements about other races I believe.
The Impact of Racism on the Health of Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander People
Context of Population
"According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there were 517,000 Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander persons in Australia in 2006. 463700 (90 percent) were of Aboriginal ancestry, while 33,300 (6 percent) had To
es Strait Islander ancestry. In 2006, 32% of Indigenous people resided in large cities, 21% in inner regional regions and 22% in outer regional areas, while 9% and 15% respectively lived in remote and extremely distant locations (Kairuz et al., 2021).
Aboriginal Society
"Aboriginal society was a semi-nomadic civilisation that prioritised family, community and country bonds above the formation of a ragrarian society. Spiritual ancestors who travelled throughout the te
ain, according to Aboriginal beliefs, built the physical environment of each particular place.
Helen Milroy (HREOC, 2008) discusses the role of land in the Dreaming and the ways, in which it sustains us during our stay on this planet. Rather from seeing the land as solely a physical environment, Aboriginal people see it as a deeply...
