Government Entitlement Programs for the Elderly Population
There is sudden increase in population of child after Second World War. The children born between 1946 and 1964 is called baby boomer population. Oldest boomer population has already been in retired home and younger boomer population has reached retiring age. Twenty five percent of US population is baby boomer population. It has reached the age where government support and healthcare are needed to support this population at elderly age (Caring Transition, 2017).
Sudden increase in elderly population needs pressurize government to take necessary steps to provide quality care to the elderly population (Gillbe, 2017). Medicare and Medicaid are the two federal government entitled programs, which cover the healthcare of the elderly population. These are state government authorized programs, which take care of elderly population. For example, California government provides adult day health care program, multipurpose senior service program, supplemental nutrition assistant program, support service program and family care provider support program (California Department of Aging, 2019).
As suggested by Henchoz et al. (2019), despite being the popular belief that baby boomer are getting good facilities in their retirement in comparison to the earlier generation, but in reality, this population is struggling from depression, disability, chronic symptoms and chronic diseases. it is not early to say that the quality of health of boomer population is not as high as expected. The government-funded programs are supporting the elderly population to certain limit, yet there are certain factors, which prevents the population to enjoy the facilities.
