If this assessment requires you to record information, your assessor will provide you with an appropriate document/template.
Scenario:
The management team of ROI organisation has decided to expand their IT infrastructure in the ROI IT software design centre due to the growth of the design team.
Cu
ent Network in ROI IT Software Design Centre
· Ten workstations that are networked using a 12 port hub and twisted pair cables.
· Shared network bandwidth is 100Mbps.
· There is no access point installed for Wi-Fi access.
· The hub is connected to a Cisco Router which is connected to the ROI’s corporate network and this router also provides a link to the internet. The router’s ethernet port supports a bandwidth of 10 Gbps.
· All computers run Windows 10 operating system.
· Existing Software; Oracle Database software, Microsoft product suite, Adobe product suite
The ROI Management team has requested the following improvements to the network:
· Additional ten workstations to be connected to the Local Area Network.
· All workstations require access to the internet.
· Cu
ently users are experiencing slow network speeds particularly when accessing the Internet and large files from shared folders. Network must be improved for greater speed, reliability and availability.
· Provision for connecting personal laptops to the existing LAN using wireless technology.
You are the network technician assigned with upgrading the network hardware for this project. Your budget for this project is A$ 30,000.
Part 1: Determine Network hardware requirements
Task 1: Propose a ‘proof of concept’ design
a) Use the table below to create a network hardware and cabling solution to meet each of the client requirements outlining any design limitations, compatibility issues uncovered previously and any relevant organisational guidelines (read guidelines in ROI_IT_Procurement_Policy.pdf for guidelines on IT Procurement and Installation). You must also analyse these requirements against any local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), wireless networks, and mobile equipment access design limitations as applicable.
You must consider the following, when designing the ‘proof of concept’:
· Characteristics of the cu
ent network including software applications, configuration parameters of cu
ent equipment
· Cu
ent speed of the network
· Cu
ent network address plan

Part 2: Obtain Network Hardware
Task 1: Prototype Design
i) Use the proof of concept and determine the type of cables and devices that needs to be purchased for upgrading the network based on client requirements and organisational guidelines (Read ROI_IT_Procurement_Policy.pdf for guidelines on IT Procurement and Installation).

ii) Review the organisational guidelines for procurement and quotations (refer to ROI_IT_Procurement_Policy.pdf for guidelines on IT Procurement and Installation) and obtain required number of quotations for cables and each device. Visit vendor web sites or local stores to obtain the quotations including technical specifications.

iii) Role Play Vendor: For this part of the assessment, the teacher will role play a vendor that you have chosen for the network upgrade. Approach your teacher and request for confirmation and more detailed information about the technical specifications for one of the devices you have chosen.
NOTE: Your teacher will assess your oral communication skills based on the criteria in the observation checklist provided.
Observation Checklist 1
The Observation Checklist will be used by your assessor to mark your performance in any of the previous three event types. Use this Checklist to understand what skills you need to demonstrate in the role play scenario, presentation or demonstration. The Checklist lists the assessment criteria used to determine whether you have successfully completed this assessment event. All the criteria must be met. Your demonstration will be used as part of the overall evidence requirements of the unit. The assessor may ask questions while the demonstration is taking place or if appropriate directly after the task/activity has been completed.
