Assignment 3 - WHO Research Proposal
Assignment 3— Research Proposal: Identifying an issue to be addressed by a qualitative research project
In this assignment you will be considering how a central issue or theme you identified in your focus group could be addressed using a qualitative research approach in a larger study. Your task is as follows:
You would like to undertake a pilot study of particular issue that arose from your preliminary focus group study. Your boss has approved this but you need to find start up funds. You have found a WHO grant that supports exploratory studies, but to convince them to support your project you need to explain what this problem or issue is, why you want to undertake this work and why you have chosen a qualitative approach. In particular, you should answer the following points in the format set out in the WHO grant application provided on FLO:
· What research has been undertaken on this topic previously
· What exactly is the problem or issue you want to address?
· Why would a qualitative research approach be useful?
· What other kinds of data would complement this approach?
· What sample will you draw information from and where?
· How will you access this sample?
· What methods do you propose to use to gather your data?
· How will you build rigour into the process of sampling and gathering the qualitative information?

Your report should be about 2,500 words long.

Criteria for Grading

You will be assessed according to the following criteria; the extent to which:

· the research question or issue is clea
· the review of past studies is adequate for the proposal
· the purpose of the research is coherent and compelling, especially in its justification of the need for a qualitative approach
· the sample is well justified and the sampling procedure is clearly stated
· the methods used to gather data or information are fully described, with evidence of ethically-responsible practices
· credibility and rigour are fully explained
· the proposal identifies the themes or concepts that arise from the analysis and connects these with the specific theoretical perspective chosen. Analysis should reflect a theoretical perspective (feminist, post structuralist etc).
· theoretical perspectives are used to examine and comment on specific phenomena arising from the data.
· the proposal is clearly written with accurate spelling, grammar and sentence construction
· the proposal complies with normal academic standards of legibility and referencing (including recognised and consistent bibliographic details).

Introduction
Type 2 diabetes is considered to be one of the most typical public health challenges and it has undergone unnoticed for quite a long time. The complication associated with it has gone too far and the prevalence is still continued to rise. Based on the cu
ent estimation, there are more than 382 million people in the world cu
ently being diagnosed with diabetes (Engler et al., 2018). In Australia, it is continue to rise since last several decades as there have been more than million of cases registered in the last 5 years and most of them belong to adult population. It has been noticed that one in every 10 people, the reason of death was found to be diabetes (Kropff et al., 2015). It has been also recorded that the children are also among the ones suffering from Type 2 diabetes. There are three main type of diabetes that occurs and are based on different parameters and conditions. The Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes, among which the Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are most prevalent (American Diabetes Association, 2016). The Type 2 diabetes is more frequent than type 1 diabetes and it is largely associated with several life style factors can be prevented however Type 1 doesn’t and cannot be prevented.
The greatest burden of Type 2 diabetes is on Aboriginal and To
es Islander in Australian compared to the non-aboriginal Australian population. In order to manage this chronic disease it requires various appropriately tailored strategies including their cultural aspects and initiatives beyond the health service sector (Adegbija, Hoy & Wang, 2015). Due to gap existing in education, employment and accessing healthcare services between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australian population the burden of chronic health issues are more in Aboriginal population. Poor lifestyle and poor management of diseases leads to more death (Javanparast, 2018). The major challenge in managing Type 2 diabetes is insulin therapy and regulation of glucose level among the patient. The self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is one of such
eakthrough technologies that help a person suffering from diabetes to monitor glucose level at home by own. Although this is primarily used in Type 1 diabetes but in recently this method is also largely being used in Type 2 diabetes (Hirsch, 2011).
The present proposal aims at studying the approach of using SMBG devices in managing Type 2 diabetes and the issues associated with it.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT
SMBG devices are known to be one of the
eakthrough technology in managing type 2 diabetes and are shown to be promising approach to control the blood glucose and also reduced the progression and incidence of complications associated with diabetes. The issues basically su
ounded by the use and adoption of this technology are that it is not explored to a greater extent. The research will be about understanding the perception and views about the technology
RATIONALE
There hasn’t been any cure developed for the Type 2 diabetes, most of the patient mainly rely on the regulation and monitoring of their diabetic condition in order to achieve a proper control over their glycaemia. For doing so, the patient are required to continuously monitor their glucose level in blood, maintain healthy diet, proper administration of insulin and perform a regular level of physical activity. The level of blood glucose can be checked at regular interval every day and with the use of finger pricks and the dose of insulin can be decided then. The insulin can be injected with the help of pump or injection along with a regular management of blood glucose level, both in combination can be an effective tool in managing diabetes. There can be a number of challenges that can be encountered on regular basis by the patient such as maintaining routine physical activity, balance e diet, administration of insulin and the stress. It often leads to generate significant complication and generate issues in the life of people.
The aim of the research is to investigate the challenges existing in the use of SMBG devices and hence understanding the issues that will hinder the use of such technology by analyzing the views of healthcare provider and patients. In addition to that, the study also explores the patient and providers view towards SMBG devices as one of the common needs of the people for diabetes management as compare to other alternative benefits available.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
There are some research questions to be asked as follows-
1) How the major challenges for adopting this technology may be described?
2) How to describe the provider and patient relationship?
3) How can the healthcare provider assess the patient towards the need of this technology?
4) How can the technology be useful and beneficial for the patient?
5) How does the common user of this technology and their view can be beneficial?
6) How can the experience of the user may impact the opinions, decision making of the patient?
SUPPOSITION
The assumption of the research proposal is through a qualitative and in depth interview method, the real problem associated with SMBG adaptation can be found out.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
There are a variety of technologies available these days that helps in providing care for the diabetes patient. The SMBG is known to be one of the
eakthrough technologies that have helped in the management of diabetes for the people. The technology was first available in the year 2006 and it helped in monitoring the glucose level in blood for both the...
