Concert Attendance Reviews
Before we get into this week's module, it is important that everybody knows what to expect regarding
our Concert Attendance Reviews (https:
gcc.instructure.com/courses/28854/assignments/390138)
for this session. First, the basics.
What: Attend a concert and write a review of the performance.
When is it due? Friday, May 28 at 11:59 pm (submitted on Canvas). There are no late
submissions.
The purpose of this project is to attend a concert of Western Art music (classical music) and write
a review of the performance. By doing so, you will put your listening skills in to practice and learn
more about how live concerts work.
It is your job to describe the composer, period, genre, and style of music you encountered at you
ecent concert experience, based on li
ary/internet research. To do each assignment, you will need
to complete the following:
1. Attend a concert featuring music from the Medieval Era up to the 21st century (please keep the
program if there is one); Jazz music is also acceptable.
2. Indicate the name of the group, conductor (if any) and composer for each piece performed (you do
not need to list each group more than once).
3. Indicate the instruments used in each concert.
4. Indicate the historical period of each composition.
5. In your own words, discuss the music you hear, using the musical concepts we are learning in
class and applying them to describe what you have heard. As you write your review, you should
also consider describing the following:
where the event took place.
what the performing environment was like.
what you thought of the conductor.
what the audience was like.
how the musical program was organized.
what was the most surprising element of what you saw/heard
what impressed you the most.
Your review should be at least one-page (250 words), double-spaced with 1” margins, in Times New
Roman or Cali
i 12 pt. font. If you follow the guidelines of the assignment, you will easily write more
than 250 words.
Due to recent events, it may not be possible to see a live performance during our session
together. However, there are professional ensembles that are allowing free access to thei

digital performances. Some of them are here. If you choose another organization to view a
concert, please confirm with me whether that would count as classical music or jazz. (Fo
instance, musical theater does not count.)

Your work will be graded on content, formatting and style writing. Formatting includes issues such as
punctuation, spelling and grammar. As this is a college level assignment, your review should be free
of these mistakes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below are some common grammar and punctuation issues to observe for this paper:
Do not use contractions (can't, won't)
Do avoid misspellings and typos/sloppiness.
Do be careful with apostrophes used with possessives. (conductor’s face)
Use Italics for titles (ex. Mozart’s Requiem)
Do not add apostrophes unnecessarily or in the wrong place. (it’s vs. its)
Do not use comma splices (The concert was great, I loved it.)
Do not repeat words whenever possible within a paragraph or constantly throughout your paper.
Do not use boring words “nice,” “really,” “very,” or “great.”
In many instances, punctuation goes inside quotation marks; learn the rules governing this usage.
Do be sure your nouns and pronouns agree.
Do not use "etc." in formal writing.
Do not ever use an ampersand (&) in formal writing.
Do not start a sentence with "also."
Do not capitalize unnecessarily (Violins, Opera)
Do not use sexist language (if a listener attends, here is what he should listen for).
Do spell out numbers nine and under. Use numerals for numbers 10 and larger except when the
number starts a sentence, in which case, spell out.
Do spell out the word "percent;" do not use the % sign.
Do spell out "United States" when used as a noun. It is OK to use "U.S." as an adjective.
If you copy an entire sentence(s) or more without giving credit to the author, then you will be guilty of
plagiarizing and subject to receiving a failing grade. If you have any questions regarding formatting
concerns or appropriate places to cite the original author, please consult me immediately.

Review: Chopin’s Two Nocturnes Op.9 No.1 and 3
Polonaise Op.44
In Vladimir Ashkenazy’s virtuoso 1983 performance of Frederic Chopin’s Nocturnes
No.1 and 3 as well as his Polonaise Op. 44, one can truly appreciate the ingenuity of Chopin’s
compositional talent on the piano. The first half of the concert is composed of Nocturnes
Op.9 No. 1 and 3, which Ashkenazy plays to gentle aplomb. Following a short
eak, he
starts with Polonaise in F# minor Opus 44, a raucous character piece. Ashkenazy’s technical
prowess on keyboard is on display here, as he switches from the delicate Nocturnes to the
unrelenting Polonaise. Ashkenazy’s performance of Chopin’s a
angements is a full display of
the pianist’s skills and his touch.
Ashkenazy’s rendition of Nocturnes Op.9 No.1 and 3 was true to their nature. They
were played in andante, a slow walking tempo. His touch created a soft tim
e and the
homophonic texture of the song created dynamics between the low and high
