11.1 Introduction 
Planning is the process of determining future decisions and actions necessary to 
accomplish intended goals, and targets. Planning for future actions helps in 
achieving goals in the most efficient and effective manner. It minimizes costs and 
reduces risks and missing opportunities. It can also increase the competitive edge 
of the organization. The planning process can be divided into three basic levels 
depending on the planning horizon: 
1. Long range planning (covers a period of several years); 
2. Medium range planning (one month to one year plans); and 
3. Short range planning (daily and weekly plans). 
Planning is done at different decision levels, strategic or tactic. It can be done at 
different organizational levels, corporate, business, functional or operational. 
Decision at the strategic level are concerned with issues related to the nature of 
existence of the business as a corporate whereas tactical decisions effect the way 
business conducted at a certain stage of its growth line. Strategic planning sets the 
long term vision of the organization and draws the strategic path for achieving that 
intended vision. Long term and short term planning at the tactical level is 
concerned on selecting ways within a preset strategy for achieving long, medium 
and short term goals and targets. Strategic planning is by definition a long term 
plan and can be done at the functional, business or corporate level. Long term 
planning, however, is not necessary strategic. In general, regardless of the type and 
purpose of planning, it includes the determination of the actions or tasks as well as 
the resources needed for their implementation.  
Scheduling is the process of putting the tasks determined by the plan into a time 
frame. It takes into consideration the intended goals, the interrelations between the

The literature review is quite significant to build in-depth understanding about the 
concepts and theories related to the topic. This article ‘The maintenance planning and 
scheduling’ is significant to explore its main facts in order to increase knowledge and 
understanding. The literature review is also quite significant for the researcher as it is effective to 
build an understanding and to determine further steps to accomplish other research aim and

Maintenance Planning and Scheduling 
According to the Turki (2009), planning and scheduling is known as future decisions and 
actions of the organizations in which they always try to achieve or accomplish the intended goals 
and valuable targets. In this article, it has also been stated that planning of a company in the 
future considerations, various benefits can be taken in order to take competitive advantage in the 
market, such as reducing costs, risks, and opportunity to expand business. Further, the 
maintenance planning specifically use different decision levels, such as strategic or tactic in the 
organization through which a certain stage of growth line can be seen to fulfill long term vision 
of the company. 
At the same time, author of this article has stated that scheduling generally comes under 
the process in which tasks is considered in the planning under a time frame effectively and 
efficiently to maintain quality, and measure the performance, as well as removing the external 
limitations and other constraints (Turki, 2009). It is expected that maintenance plays the most 
important role in increasing standard of the business quality by improving activities of inventory 
management system broadly. Addition to this, in this article, maintenance is used as the critical 
functional area in the manufacturing and construction industry effectively and efficiently.

Further, it can be seen that planning and scheduling that are aspects of the maintenance 
management usually contribute as improving quality of the work by implementing or using best 
methods and procedures. However, maintenance uses its strategic plan that is a major function to 
achieve and align objectives and goals of the organization. In this article, it is cleared that 
maintenance operations are generally alternative selection in the organization to achieve 
objectives and increase internal management capability (Turki, 2009). In this scenario, planning 
activity of the organization is used to forecast the future associated with possible changes in the 
business for a long-time.  
Strategic Planning in Maintenance 
 In traditional point of view, maintenance is not considered as strategic unit, but its 
function is interesting for the researchers and practitioners to analyze its benefits in the global 
competitive market.
