Introduction
The Northern Te
itory of Australia has one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse population with its demographic profile distributed at various geographic distances. Aboriginal people, although make up the 30 per cent of the total population of the te
itory; however, this population are observed to have some of the poorest health outcomes amongst the Australians. They are found to have shorter life expectancy, born with low birth weight, suffer from chronic diseases at a very young age.
Besides, they also consist of a number of risk factors affecting the wellbeing and health of the Aboriginal population. This led to the formation of the Aboriginal Health Policy Unit that was responsible for building strategic leadership as well as provides policy advice in improving the well-being and the health of the Aboriginals’ population. The unit was concerned in the development, including the implementation of the health policies so that culturally secured health services are provided to this population.
Problem and Context
The well-being of the Aboriginals and the To
es Strait Islander was necessary through the health policy because this population had
oader issues in terms of the equity, rights and social justice. The significance of any culture is the wellbeing that is highlighted by their good health and demonstrated by the traditional knowledge and use of practices, like relying upon the traditional healers that were observed to have adapted by the western science in many ways. As stated by Gwynne and Lincoln (2017), culture has been observed to have played an important role in the people decision-making process and seeking health services.
Further, the culture of the Aboriginals also played a unique role in the process of acceptance of treatments with their adherence and follow up of treatment procedures. However, in many occasions, it was observed that the culture of the Aboriginals needed to be differentiated from certain excessive behaviour that played a detrimental role in the well-being and health of the communities and families (Topp, Edelman & Taylor, 2018). Some of the main aspects that were addressed by the Health Policy for the Aboriginals included health equity with a human rights approach, community engagement and control over the health and well-being of the Aboriginal and To
es Strait. This included population, partnership, accountability and effective monitoring of the health of the population.
Some of the problems that had been highlighted by the policy included social as well as emotional well-being problems related to the mental illness. In addition, social as well as emotional well-being requires long-term mental health support (Browne, Gleeson, Adams, Minniecon & Hayes, 2019). In addition, as a part of the health policies other factors that need to be included were certain factors that contributed to the problems on health and well-being of the Aboriginals and To
es Strait population were homelessness, unemployment and lack of education that resulted in problems such as grief, trauma, abuse, substance misuse, discrimination and racism.
Other issues which the health plan policy that needs to be covered include risk factors like smoking that added to chronic lung conditions, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Other factors like obesity, poor nutrition with a lack of adequate physical exercise resulted in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risks. The nutritional status of this population was another concern that contributed to the poor health status of the population. This was due to the social disadvantage, social factors and the geographical disadvantages.
This has resulted in the problem in the food supply, violence as well as an increase in the hospitalization due to the assaults encountered by this population. As pointed out by Browne et al. (2017), there were certain environmental aspects that contributed to the well-being and health of the population. This included an ear and eye health problem, rheumatoid fever and heart diseases. These conditions were contributed by situations like overcrowding of the Aboriginal community, poverty and poor hygiene condition.
Frame of Reference
The health policies, as well as programs in case of the Aboriginals and To
es Strait, are often based on evidence-based that depended on data system and robust health researches. To build the evidence-based policy, skilled professionals with high-quality data helped in the improvement in data collection process in addition to the quality analysis of the community health status (NSW State Health Plan, 2020).
It was observed that the health...
