INSTRUCTIONS
Environmental indicators are simple measures that are used to provide information about the environment and to maintain an overview of any changes that may occur. The indicators also provide important information regarding sustainable development indicators, which are meant to track the overall sustainability of a society with respect to its environmental, social and economic integrity and health.
You are a member of an ethical environmental ‘Think Tank’. Your group is increasingly becoming concerned about a particular geographic region. Your concern is related to a specific environmental health indicator. You want to write a submission to the recent Government’s Senate Committee of Inquiry that is cu
ently looking into global health and the environment.
ASSESSMENT TASK:
You must identify the geographic region your group is concerned about, it may be at the state or national level. See:
ï‚· Centres for Disease Control and Prevention,
ï‚· WHO Environmental Health Indicators,
ï‚· European Implementation Framework,
ï‚· Environmental Indicators for New Zealand,
ï‚· Victorian Framework.
You must also identify one environmental health indicator about which your group is concerned - from the following list:
ï‚· Water (safe drinking water or ambient/environmental water)
ï‚· Sanitation (wastewater control)
ï‚· Air quality (indoor or outdoor)
ï‚· Solid waste management
ï‚· Hazardous/toxic substances
ï‚· Noise
ï‚· Disasters
ï‚· Food safety
ï‚· Traffic accidents
ï‚· Vector-borne disease
ï‚· Climate and geography
ï‚· Housing and the built environment
In your submission, please address the following Terms of Reference:
1. Describe your organisation and its interest in the issue of environment and global health.
2. What is the environmental issue that has been identified by your group?
3. Where is it located?
4. What is the potential impact upon the health of the population that you have identified?
5. What are the driving forces (economic, social, political, institutional, developmental), or the social determinants behind the environmental indicator you have identified?
6. What effect is climate change (if any) likely to have on this issue?
7. What evidence-based approaches to environmental risk assessment and management of this issue do you recommend and why?
8. How is the environmental health issue cu
ently being managed?
9. How are issues of access and equity being considered?
10. What suggestions do you propose to address gaps in cu
ent management actions and practices?
11. What suggestions do you propose to address gaps in cu
ent policy, regulation and management for this environmental health issue?
12. What critical infrastructure, legislative and regulatory measures at the federal and state level agencies will be required?
13. What role do you see for your group in the risk assessment and management of this issue?
14. What role do you see for existing health and other agencies, key stakeholders including community groups?
15. Conclusion.
Assessment Criteria:
Assignments will be assessed in terms of the extent to which students demonstrate:
ï‚· Knowledge and understanding of evidence-based approaches to environmental risk assessment and management (25%)
Critical analysis (30% in total)
Critical analysis of the driving forces (economic, social, political, institutional, developmental) behind the environmental determinants (10%)
Critical analysis of the impact of the environmental risk upon the geographic population (10%)
Critical analysis of the impact of the environmental risk upon equity issues (10%)
Analysis of evidence to recommend changes in cu
ent policy, regulation and management (25%)
General Assessment Criteria (20%)
Provides a lucid introduction
Shows a sophisticated understanding of the key issues
Shows ability to interpret relevant information and literature in relation to chosen topic
Demonstrates a capacity to explain and apply relevant concepts
Shows evidence of reading beyond the required readings
Justifies any conclusions reached with well-formed arguments and not merely assertions

1. The organisation and its interest in the issue of environment and global health
Water pollution, increased u
anisation and degradation of aquatic system has led to rise interest in water management and integrated water management for water recycle and conservation of water resources. Water International WaterCentre (IWC) is one of the Think tanks organisations that provides awareness on water crisis, and educate people by giving training and applied research for development of capacity to promote whole of water cycle (Kang et al., 2017).
The whole-of-water cycle considers optimisation of water usage, management of water crisis, minimising consumption of water, and wastewater recycle. This institute aims at educating people by integrating water management in the global level. Its post-graduate courses include integrated water management, which is globally recognised. Besides, it is one of the leading post-graduation courses to provide education on best practice for water management across the globe. It also has acquired the participation of 20 countries (McIntosh & Kirkwood, 2019).
2. Environmental issues identified the group
The environmental issue that the group is concerned about is water crisis, hurdles of water management and possible outcomes on people health and necessities. Water is one of the most basic necessities of human beings. However, as argued by Pedro-Monzonis, Solera, Fe
er, Estrela and Paredes-Arquiola (2015), with rise in population, and u
anisation, this resource has been degraded and there may be a significant water scarcity because of the cu
ent scenario of water crisis. U
an water supplies are basically dependent upon the limited resources of fresh water or ground water. However, increasing u
anisation and demand of fresh water will put a burden on the limiting water resources.
3. Location
It is located in Brisbane, Australia.
4. The potential impact upon the health of the population
Australia is one of the countries to face maximum water shortage. Some areas are close to 100% water shortage (Zyoud, Kaufmann, Shaheen, Samhan & Fuchs-Hanusch, 2016). In such cases, it is crucial to think about water management. While water management focuses on recycled water for usage, it is also important to understand the co
ect practices to ca
y out water management. If the water is not recycled in a proper way, and consumed by people, it can cause severe chronic diseases.
Water ca
ies the most potential and lethal microbes and bacteria that cause dia
heal infection, dysentery and other health disorders like typhoid (Briggs & World Health Organization, 1999). Most Water management includes wastewater management, flood and storm water management, harvesting with recycled water and managing the natural resources of water to meet the necessities and demands by the population.
5. Driving forces or the social determinants behind the environmental indicator
The factors, which act here, as the driving force, are majorly, the population growth and u
anisation. However, water is the most basic requirement for survival. It directly puts effect on the economic, social, political and developmental aspects. Australia is one of the countries, which are nearing water shortage in a few decades (Hoekstra, 2016). Water management is thus...
