Part A
1. Explaining 11 components of a valid routine subcutaneous insulin medication order and its significance
As analysed by Baker (2014), Lispro (Humalog), Aspart (Novolog), Glulisine (Apidra) acts rapidly and covers needs of insulin after taking the meals from the time of in taking the food. Regular (R) or novolin, Velosulin (used for insulin pump) these are short-acting insulin that covers the insulin of the meals that are taken within 30-60 minutes. Insulin glargine (Basaglar, Lantus, Toujeo), Insulin detemir, insulin degludec (Tresiba) are long acting insulins that takes almost full day to work. Ben prescribed with Aspart (NovoRapid) Flexpen 10 unita TDS and Glargine (Lantus) Solostor 30 unit’s nocte.
2. Medication of Ben in relation to pathophysiology of type 1 diabetes and the mechanism of action of NovoRapid insulin
T1DM is resulted by the combination of environmental and genetic influences from autoimmune destruction of β-cells inside the pancreas that produces insulin (Burns, Bush& Sinha, 2014), Ben was prescribed subcutaneous insulin with aspart NovoRapid flexpen 10 units TDS and Lantus Solostar 30 unit’s nocte with ongoing care for the type 1 diabetes. The NovoRapid insulin is injected under the skin that helps in lowering the blood glucose level and is considered to be long-acting insulin. NovoRapid insulin is taken before meal.
3. Onset, peak and duration of action for NovoRapid insulin according to Bullock and Manias (2017) and explaining NovoRapid should be administered in relation to food intake
The onset of Aspart (Novolog) is 10-20 mins; peak is 40-50 mins and 3-5 hours of duration. Aspart insulin is insulin that acts rapidly and takes 10-20 mins for working after injection and requires 1-3 hours for its maximum effect and stops working after 3-5 hours (Fan, Lau & Zhao 2015). NovoRapid generally must be taken immediately before intake of food, if in case it is not...
