Individual Learning Goal 1
My first learning goal is to apply my skills and knowledge on placements by administering intravenous (IV) injection on a minimum of ten patients by 30th of October 2020.
Which of the NMBA RN Standard for Practice does this learning goal relate to?
My learning goal of administering intravenous injection relates to Standard 6 of registered nurse standards for practice, (NMBA, XXXXXXXXXXIt has the following standards; Standard 6: Provides safe appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice. Within the standard 6 it relates most to 6.1; Provides safe, quality practice to achieve goals and outcomes that are responsive to the nursing needs of people.
The rationale to why this is important for my practice as a nurse
I need to learn and practice IV medication administration skills because it is one of the crucial responsibilities of the nurse to perform safe medication. The main rationale to practice safe intravenous medication is that I need to be competent and confident to perform it because it directly affects my future practice as a registered nurse (RN). It is essential to be aware of my practice and keep nurse standards for practice on the mind because any negligence could be hazardous for patients and me. According to Lynn XXXXXXXXXXinco
ect medication administration, the procedure could lead to serious effects on the patients such as anaphylactic shock and death. Using the best available evidence to handle sharps and needles prevents from needlestick injuries (García-Gámez et al., XXXXXXXXXXHence, practising IV medication skills ensures safe and effective treatment, quality care and helps to achieve the best possible outcomes for the consumers.
Strategies to achieve this goal
· Research: I will search for updated evidence-based practice tools to perform IV medication. The sources like Mims online, NPS online, Australian Medication Handbook could be used to study in-depth about different drugs which would keep me well informed and provide rationalised care (Sonğur, Özer, Gün and Top, 2017).
· Practice: I will attend simulation labs and use the necessary equipment to perform IV medication such as Injection, drawing needle, injection water and so on. I will practice safe medication skills on the mannequin in the presence of my lab tutors. I will complete the objective structured clinical assessment (OSCA) with satisfactory results to ensure that I am competent to do it.
· Perform: During placements, I will perform IV medication under the direct supervision of buddy RN. I will follow all the necessary infection control policies and 5 rights, three checks of drug administration. I will provide necessary information about the procedure to the patient and take consent from them before IV administration.
Individual Learning Goal 2
My second learning goal is to provide five patient education to patients about their condition by the 30th of October 2020.
Which of the NMBA RN Standard for Practice does this learning goal relate to?
The nursing goal of providing patient education relates to standard 3 of registered nurse standards for practice (NMBA, XXXXXXXXXXThe standard 3 mentions that nurses should maintain the capability for practice. Within standard 3, it relates most to 3.2 which refers that nurses should ‘provide the information and education required to enhance people’s control over health,’ (NMBA, 2016).
The rationale to why this is important for my practice as a nurse
The nursing goal of providing patient education is important for my practice as a nurse because it is a part of the nursing care plan to provide patient education as it assists them to be well informed about their disease, their treatment options and expected outcomes (van Til et al., XXXXXXXXXXIf the patients are well informed, it makes them participate actively in their care plan which eventually improves patient outcomes and quality of nursing care.
The registered nurse standards for practise emphasises on providing patient education to give patients better opportunities to take control of their health and well-being (NMBA, XXXXXXXXXXThis allows them to gain all the necessary information for self-management and rehabilitation after discharge (Fredericks, Guruge, Sidani and Wan, XXXXXXXXXXTherefore, when patients learn to identify symptoms or deteriorating condition and visit hospital sooner, it helps nurses to provide superior care and achieve targeted nursing goals (Bennet et al, XXXXXXXXXXFurthermore, I must provide patient education as it enhances my learning, knowledge and clinical skills. Through continuous research and education, I can maintain my capability to practice safe, person-centred and evidence-based care.
Strategies to achieve this goal
· Research: I will attend all my tutorials to gain necessary information and knowledge about the subject I am studying and the type of patients I will encounter during placements. I will research on the specific topic that the education would be provided by using different learning materials such as journals, textbooks and NSW health sites
· Practice: I will practice providing patient education before I do it because it is important to be confident and have good ve
al communication skills to provide effective education. I will practice it with my friends by role-playing as a nurse and patient. Moreover, I will also participate in different group presentations in my tutorial group to be confident and have superior communication skills.
· Perform: I will prepare a lesson plan and show that to my supervising RN and facilitator to let them see the information that I would be providing to patients and their family members. I will seek approval from the nurse educator and nurse unit manager. Once they approve, I would explain the purpose and estimated time of the education to the patients and gain their consent. I will provide patient education on their illness/condition related topics.

Details
You are to consider your learning needs for your SNUG304 WPE, aligning the NMBA RN
Standards for Practice XXXXXXXXXXand write 2 individual learning goals that you are able to achieve
during your WPE. Please refer to page 8 and 9 of your WPE Assessment Tool.
Registered nurses need to be able to think critically, reflect and assess their own performance
against a set of standards. Through each of the workplace experience subjects in the Bachelor
of Nursing, you will be asked to set your own learning goals and then assess your performance
against the RN Standards for Practice XXXXXXXXXXIn this fifth workplace experience, you need to
consider the types of learning experiences you should access to assist your development.
Learning goals are statements concerning what you would like to accomplish in your learning
during your SNUG 304 WPE placement.
Learning goals may focus on:
• your personal learning goals
• particular achievements you would like to aim for
• specific knowledge or techniques you would like to focus on
• transferable skills that could contribute to your practice as a nurse
• progression towards larger learning goals.
