The professional practice setting selected is IPC Health Wyndham Vale. IPC health is one of the largest community healthcare service providers in Victoria, Australia. They aimed towards improving health of the communities. They connect the user to large number of healthcare professionals from single point. Cu
ently, IPC health operated in six sites in Melbourne’s West and employ 400 staff with annual budget of $41 million. They are focused in providing support and fulfilling needs patients by delivering services closer to their home in a culturally focused environment. The organisation follows the values of respect, responsiveness, fairness, creativity, quality and connectedness (IPC health, 2019).
    They work to provide high quality primary healthcare services to the people. Apart from this, they work in collaboration to promote health literacy, make healthcare services accessible to the people who unable to seek the services or have low health literacy. At Wyndham Vale centre, the services provided by organisation include counselling such as generalist, family counselling, Alcohol and Drug counselling, Gambler’s Help counselling and Financial Counselling, general health, which include Indigenous health services, refugee health services and general practitioner services, allied health therapies such as dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, diabetic education, chronic care and home-based aged care (IPC health, 2019).
2. Roles and Responsibilities of Preceptor Nurse in Practice Setting
    The preceptor nurse can be defined as an experienced and competent nurse who acts as a role model to all the newly employed nursing staff, student nurses and newly graduated nurses. As suggested by Rusch, Manz, Hercinger, Oertwich and McCafferty (2019), apart from the standard nursing roles, they act as guide to the new nurses and help them become part of the organisation. They teach nursing students and provide them, which practical knowledge, which is necessary for the future application in the nursing profession.
The preceptor nurse has the responsibility to socialise, protect, educate and evaluate nurses who are undergoing transition from ending of formal education into a working environment or to the nurses who are undergoing transition into a new working environment. Preceptor nurses assured of the formal and improved transition, which results in good retention and improved competency among nursing staff. On the contrary, as argued by Watkins, Hart and Mareno (2016), in IPC health preceptor nurse also provide supervision and mentoring to the nursing students.
They pursue the role of maintenance of the practice environment. Preceptor nurse practises in quality service improvement and internal audit compliance as directed by the organisation. They perform many other duties apart from this. As noted by Ryan and McAllister (2017), preceptor nurse is an experienced registered nurse who prepares students using range of skills. They role model the professional interactions on the care unit, demonstrating nursing actions and giving timely and appropriate feedback to improve the nursing skills in students as well as newly graduate roles.
In IPC health, preceptor nurses act as a resource person to others in relation to care plan and health assessment. They conduct comprehensive, holistic wellness and illness assessment using established evidence-based techniques, tools and methods. They maintained and continuously improve systems to ensure appropriate patient management and follow up. They also perform other duties as per the direction of the supervisors such as assisting doctors in surgery procedure, organisation of immunisation for refugees and checking BMI and blood test results. Preceptor nurses make refe
als for the patients. They perform ECG, blood check after pathology get closes and immunisation of children.
Working under preceptor nurse allowed learning the crucial roles and responsibilities, which nurses need to pursue in their nursing career. As suggested by Miura, Daub and Hensley (2019), preceptor nurse develops an environment necessary to learning, determines the appropriate patient-centred care projects for the nursing student and takes the assistance of the newly graduated nurse in providing patient-centred care to the patients. Preceptor nurse collaborates with the goals of the students and guides them in achieving it. The preceptors demonstrated its knowledge in the clinical area and the patient populations help the nursing students and newly graduated nurse to select the relevant and attainable goals and outcomes.
In IPC health, preceptor nurses provide safe and effective evidence-based care to achieve positive health outcomes. It initiates and conducts health maintenance in partnership with individual and families. It provides timely and accurate information and education to individual and families to promote health. The responsibilities, taken by the preceptor nurses, in the organisation, act as the role model for the nursing student. Students learnt about applying clinical skills and under the guidance of the preceptor nurse, they get the chance to apply their theoretical knowledge practically.
Preceptor nurse is guide to the students and develop clinical skills in them so that student can able to collaborate with patients and its families to achieve the improved health outcomes. It is important to note that at preceptor nurse at IPC health have made focus in providing care to the patient as well as act as their advocate so that they can achieve high quality health outcomes.
