Matchmaker Reflection:
One thing I need to think about some more…
I feel I still need to think about my career plan ahead. Following my plan to continue my education is my primary goal (Plan A) however, upon completing the matchmaker assessment careers I had thought about doing in the past were some of my results. I was always interested in social work and one of the careers that was part of my assessment was child and youth worker. I have been hesitant to go into this field in the past because I feel it takes a great emotional toll on you and a lot of baggage is ca
ied from the workplace to home – something I am not so sure I could deal with. Taking these stressors into consideration, I also realized these are possibilities that could happen with a career in nursing as well. Although different fields, they have a lot of similarities based around healthcare: medicinal and mental.
My next steps are…
My next steps are to really na
ow it down to what I would like to do as a career. I think instead of just wanting to get into a career or liking the idea of it I really need to throughly do my research in the two fields I am most interested in: nursing and child and youth worker. I think completing this assignment will provide me with a lot of information where I am to weigh in on the pros and cons of each of these professions and possibly help with deciding which is better suited for me. I am also considering to apply for some volunteer work at shelters over the winter. This would allow me to have a great insight on what being employed in a facility like this would be. Another option I just came across is there are opportunities to work alongside some nurses if you have a previous medical background. Since I have some experience as a lab technician I wanted to look further into this and see if there are cu
ent postings available.
Learning Styles Reflection:
The main things I understand better about my skills and learning styles…
After completing the assessment for learning styles it indicated my two top preferences for learning are through visual and auditory aids. I feel these two styles go together and can benefit me in my future career with of only how I learn but also succeed in my job. Particularly in the nursing field you need to visualize something such as patients describing an ailment of some sort or where it is affecting them. Auditory would have a major part in this career as by just being an active listener and learning from the patient. I also understand how using these learning styles co
ectly can benefit me: creating visual aids if none provided or reading notes out loud. For educational purposes I try to do both of these but if not provided some times they get left behind. I definitely understand in order to succeed I have to take the extra step to co
ectly learn in a way I can best retain information. Something I learned about my skills is that they are very people orientated: providing care, listening, and handling people tactfully whereas practical skills such as driving, repairing or operating machinery I am not skilled. Which leads me to my next reflection…
The one thing I realized I need to start doing…
I need to stop avoiding skills I lack knowledge of or feel nervous to learn. Relating these skills to a tactile learning style I definitely avoid even trying to do it or learn that way. I feel the knowledge has to be presented in front of me instead of completing hands on. I would rather have someone explain to me how to do it instead of me trying it out myself afraid of doing it wrong. I realize if pursuing a career in nursing there will be certain equipment I will have to learn hands on so it would better to adjust to this learning style beforehand and feel comfortable. I also realized I need to start driving, again, that is something I have avoided because it is a hands on skill I am nervous to do. Some jobs require you to have a reliable source of transportation for work and also it benefits you because you are open to more job opportunities.

Pathway ‘A’ Description/Posting:
To become a nurse I must first complete a 2 year diploma program as well as obtain my Ontario license and complete the Canadian practical exam. As a nurse I could be working various shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays. The hours vary but a lot of places of employment work with 12 hour shifts. Places of employment could include hospitals, doctor offices, rehabilitation centres, and nursing homes. Your number one priority in this field Is providing care to those in need. Day to day responsibilities could include but not limited to: administering and managing medications, caring for wounds, educating patients about nutrition and self care, and disease prevention.
I became interested in this profession as I was working at my previous job. I was employed as a lab technician but felt the interaction between patients and myself was very limited. Even though throughout the lab technician diploma program and work place you have similar knowledge as nurses you don’t quite get the same experience. As a lab tech, my main job duty was to run the test, I would know the reason for proceeding with any of the test but as part of our code of ethics wasn’t allowed to discuss any of this information with the patient. The problem with this was I felt like I wanted to, that I had the knowledge to provide accurate information if the patient asked or questions about results but due to my limitations in this position was unable to do so. This encouraged me to switch to nursing because not only would I have a background in this type of field but I would be switching to something I was more interested in. I’ve already. Even exposed to this type of environment so expanding my knowledge even more and making this change would allow myself to grow in the healthcare industry. I feel very committed to this career because I am very passionate about healthcare and providing it for those who need it. I think the more providers there are for this field can only benefit the entire population to ensure everyone is healthy and well taken care of.
