Introduction
Counselling can be an effective measure for treating addiction i
espective of its kind. Addiction can be considered as a behavioural disorder, which if left untreated, can negatively affect the financial condition, social and personal aspects of individual’s life. However, it would be essential to understand that it depends upon the therapist when it comes to measuring the effectiveness of therapy. This reflective paper would talk about the presented case study of gambling addiction and the potential role of therapist in helping client to get over this.
Further, this paper would also present a discussion upon the strength of relationship in getting over addiction. Efforts would be made to inculcate and present certain theoretical aspects used in the session along with potential skills. This paper would also present a comprehensive analysis of patient’s psychosocial assessment and the way; it could have facilitated gambling addiction. Nevertheless, this paper would conclude with certain plans and effective future interventions while working with similar clients.
Reason for Contact or Refe
al
Gambling is not an issue or necessarily a problem and unlike alcohol or drugs, gambling does not lead to addiction. However, it would be essential to understand that gambling can become a major concern if someone is compelled towards it i
espective of all the consequences. The cu
ent case study presented similar scenario where Lin and Geoff were ma
ied and had a happy life with one daughter until Lin got addicted to gambling.
Lin reported that it all started with normal outings with friends for fun (YouTube, 2020). However, she is not aware of the time when it turned into addiction. As an outcome of this, Lin stole some money from her work and gambled it all away. Further, Lin also reported that she did not face any issues with her boss or her job; however, stealing money from work led to loss of her job.
One of the major rationales behind stealing money from work was the desperation and urge to get some money and play poker, as an outcome of which, Lin reported that she stole money from work. Further, Lin mentioned that it is hard for her to believe that she was refe
ed for counselling sessions as it is considered disrespectful in her culture and she feels ashamed of stealing money from work.
Lin’s husband Geoff also presented disagreement with Lin’s actions and considered her act as a major reason
inging shame to their family and social status. Likewise, it would be essential to understand that, besides stealing money from work, Lin did not perform any other offense or felony and she also feel ashamed of her actions; therefore, these counselling sessions should be effective for her.
Strength of the Relationships Built
Hatchett (2017) suggested that building a strong relationship with the clients is an essential part of my job and this is majorly because clients should be able to open up with me regarding their issues or concerns. Being a social worker in community based gambling service, my role in every individual’s life is unique and distinct and this is majorly because every client comes with variable factors, which drifted them towards gambling. I meet with strangers every day who look up to me or come to me for support; therefore, it becomes essential for me to understand them properly, which is not possible unless they open up to me.
Considering Lin’s case, one of the major factors, which drifted her towards gambling, was the inability to discuss or open up to anyone in her friends, family or outside. Therefore, this pulled her deep into this addiction forcing her to steal money from work and being presented in court for conducting a felony. Therefore, building a strong relationship is essential to allow the clients
eak their limitations and begin to uncover their goals accompanied by revealing their true self and Lin is no exception. Lin reported that she feels ashamed of stealing money from her work and she recognises the negative effects it implied on her relationship with Geoff as well as her daughter, her financial and social life.
Therefore, one of the major aspects, where I focused was opening up in front of anyone Lin feels comfortable. Taylor (2020) mentioned that therapy relationship with the clients could make substantial as well as consistent contributions towards the outcomes i
espective of any treatment or approach used in the therapy. Likewise, strength of the relationship needs to be considered as a major determinant of whether the client might succeed in improving. Therefore, my major emphasis in the presented session was to make Lin understand that she can open up to her husband and to me also if she needs because this would really help in overcoming the addiction.
Skills Used and Their Theoretical Foundations
One of the major approaches I used in this session was strength-based approach....
