Imperialism didn't start in the 19th century but the above-mentioned video is about 19th century imperialism which had a couple of advantages but majorly were filled with various disadvantages. In the beginning of the 18th century silver was the biggest import of China as were having a successful trade with the Europeans. However, they stopped doing so as the then leader of China who realized that his empire had all the things they wanted. In 1830 the Europeans made changes into the trade policies which supplied an abundance of opium in China which shifted the balance of the trade from the hands of China. China started confiscating the opium sent from Europe and drained them into the sea. The British demanded compensation in land where they could build colonies which China denied and in the end the British people took it by force.
