This annotated bibliography & critical analysis was completed using 'slightly'
different instructions than the ones you will use - but its structure & style are
co
ect.

Part 1 – find a news media article or social media post about a controversial
issue
• A screenshot of the title (including date);
• The full bibliographic details for the news article or social media post in Harvard style;
• Two to three sentences that explain the issue underlying the article/post.

Part 2 – Annotated Bibliography (800 words equivalent):

Kennon, P 2009, ‘Yes being a survivor of domestic abuse’, mzsadiemae43, Twitter, 12
March, retrieved 28 March 2019, twitter.com/mzsadiemae43 >.
This tweet is a response to the original tweet of Joe Biden. The aim of it is to express the support
to the idea of the original tweet, which emphasizes the prominence of VAWA (Violence Against
Women Act), a federal law to end violence and provide protection for women. The author implies
facts about the danger with which women cope in society. In view of these facts, it is essential that
women are protected by the government and have grounds to facilitate their rights. Also, given the
fact that the author herself is a survivor of domestic abuse, her agreement with the problem’s
solution proposed by Joe Biden in the original tweet has remarkably been bolstered. This tweet
will contribute to my research as it provides an example of framing effects. To put it another way,
my research will show how perception and personal experience of an audience is structured and
ecalled by the framing technique used in the original tweet.

Scheufele, DA 2000, ‘Agenda-Setting, Priming, and Framing Revisited: Another Look at
Cognitive Effects of Political Communication’, Mass Communication & Society, vol.3, no.2,
pp XXXXXXXXXX, doi: XXXXXXXXXX/S15327825MCS0323_07
This article is aimed at defining media effects theory and distinguishing 3 salient types of media
effects which are agenda-setting, priming, and framing. To the author, acknowledging the
conceptual differences between these types of media effects are prominent to further examine how
each type contributes to the audience’s message abso
ing process. Agenda-setting and Priming
are presented by “Salience” premise while Framing, which constitutes social norms and pragmatic
practices, is based on “Attribution” premise. The article also states that agenda-setting and priming
are directed towards an objective to tell readers what to think about, thus activating memory
association of message receivers. Meanwhile, framing sheds light on the most prominent aspects
of an issue and structures ways to interpret it. Framing is based on “primary frameworks”, a term
used to illustrate schemes of people’s message interpretation, which encompasses 2 categories:
natural and societal frames. The former is used to interpret the natural events whilst the latter is to
help “locate, perceive, identify and label” (Goffman,1974, p.21) human’s behaviour. By and large,
the article discusses the theoretical differences of 3 types of media effects and highlights the
distinctiveness and effectiveness of framing. More research is required to analyse framing effects
in different political and social contexts, thus probing the prevailing practices of framing used by
media influencers. This article will contribute to my research as it distinguishes framing from the
other types of media effects while illustrating a salient distinction in the individual-level impact of
these 3 types on shaping perception.
How Framing Effects Guide Decisions 2016, film, The Great Courses, San Francisco.

This video is aimed at analysing people’s interpretation of information when being presented with
opinion frames. In the talk, the speaker mentions fundamental theories and features of framing
effects; For instance, 3 prominent types of framing effects which are status quo, gain/loss, and
opportunity cost neglect are postulated. While status quo framing is based on people’s tendency to
prefer options framed as status quo or default options, gain/loss framing implies that losses, more
than gains, evoke greater reactions of people. Meanwhile, the other framing type refers to a
consideration of “opportunity costs”, a defined term as the loss of other alternatives when one
alternative is chosen. By investigating these types of framing effects, the meaning and mechanisms
of framing are elucidated, indicating that framing does not alter the innate features of information
ut rather interpret it by way of shaping receivers’ perception. This video also accentuates on the
framing’s salience in economic and social grounds considering its potency of affecting one’s mind.

Paulas, R XXXXXXXXXX, ‘HOW DOES TWITTER INFLUENCE THE WAY WE
COMMUNICATE?’, Pacific Standard, 17 Fe
uary, retrieved XXXXXXXXXXMarch 2019,
https:
psmag.com/news/how-does-twitter-influence-the-way-we-communicate>.

This article aims to scrutinize features and effects of Twitter, a model of social media. In order to
understand how people communicate and interpret information through social media, the author
delineates 8 features of Twitter and their influences on people’s perception. These features
contribute to the process of analysing cognitive control and response inhibition, the premise for the
esearch on decision-making behaviour when it comes to social media. The author also
exemplifies the interactions and communication through social media between public figures
such as the president of the United States and the audience. Evidently, social media has
concu
ently become a reliable communicative tool for media influencers to disseminate
message and structure its approach to the audience. The ideas discussed in this article will pave
the way for further research on social media as a prevailing communicative tool and its
importance to media influencers.
Part 3 – Critical Analysis (400 words +/- 10%)
The aim of my research is to elaborate on how media effects theory, the theoretical perspective that
delineates the influences of media on the audiences, is used to understand the practices of framing
and social media in communication. My research is composed of three main parts; the first part is
to compare framing to other types of media effects and discuss framing effects evidenced in the
tweet. The theory of media effects encompasses three salient models: Agenda-setting, priming, and
framing. Among these models, framing is regarded as a more comprehensive model that records
to a higher degree the extent to which the perception of audiences is affected. According to Michael
et al. (2016), in order to understand framing, we need to analyse its mechanisms and effects
compared with that of agenda-setting and priming. Understanding the differences between these
types of media effects will show the intended purpose of information senders when using framing
as opposed to other models of media effects to confront the audience. For instance, in the tweet
framing is evidenced in the statement “Nothing is more urgent than…women safer”, which

to emphasize the issue’s salience and underline a directed solution to the issue. The second part of
my research is to elaborate on the reasons why many media influencers or public figures use the
framing technique to disseminate information or discuss a problem. These reasons could be
analysed based on the scope of media effects and people’s tendency to be more attracted to directed
ather than self-interpretive information. Also, the audience’s opinions are mercurial and
susceptible to the influences of the framing of the information. Hence media influencers can use
framing to achieve a certain level of influence. The last part of my paper is the discussion of social
media being used as a tool to propagate messages. In this part, features and effects of social media
will be elucidated in order to support the idea that delivering information through social media
might be more effective than through other forms of communication. Moreover, I will expand on
my assumption that social media is of pivotal importance to both information senders and receivers
as it facilitates communication between these 2 groups. By and large, my research will evaluate the
models of media effects theory and postulate an accentuation of the practices of framing within
social media, supported with evidence from the original tweet.

Skills Audit
Your skills describe your ability to do something well. In addition, it’s also important to consider what you like to do. Most jobs require both technical skills (such as those related to a specific profession or industry) and soft skills which are generic and of
oader value (such as communication and team work).
You can develop skills through a wide variety of experiences, but only you can decide if you will enjoy using that skill.
The below skills audit will help you assess your level of ability in a range of skills and identify those you enjoy. It will also help identify any skills gaps you have for you to work on in the future.

CAREER READINESS REFLECTION
After having taken the self audit, I came to realize strong and weak parts in order to determine my readiness of the career. At first, I am adaptable to the situations either they are positive or negative or in the modern organizational context of professional working, adaptability plays pivotal role. Every professional has to adjust according to the situations at workplace. Adhering to the principle norms of working is the second ability that I see as strength. I pursue to the best of my ability the main values of work assigned. It helps me in gathering directions to make constructive atmosphere for work. At the same time, I see that I can handle conflict resolutions well; they fall into my area of expertise to some extent. In the same way, in order to resolve any confronting situation at workplace, I reckon that I am prepared to confront the challenges.
Managing the communication norms at workplace also contribute significantly in the success of a professional. Throughout the course, I have groomed my abilities to communicate effectively. There are some basic...
