COVID CASES ON THE RISE, YET NOT A MASK IN SIGHT
Let's face it: No one enjoys wearing a mask cover half their face.Masks can cause acne, be scratchy, cause
foggy glasses— all reasons why people quickly ditch them as soon as they can or simply forget to take them
with.
Health care experts warn that at this point in the pandemic, when the benefits of mask-wearing are growing
clear and COVID-19 cases are rising rapidly, with hospitalizations and deaths following. Residents should be
wearing their masks more, not less.
With the growing number of covid cases within the Fraser Valley, a region hit the hardest in British Columbia
with COVID cases, a local resident has just had enough of people not taking this disease seriously "It's just a
shame, I walked into Save on Foods last night and probably 1 in 10 people were wearing a mask, there was
no social distancing in the produce aisle" says the Mission resident.
When we asked Buneet whether stricter measures should be put in place she stated " I don't think we should
go in to direct lockdown mode as we did before but I would like masks to be made mandatory and the
cu
ent rules to be enforced more strictly, don't like wearing a mask? don't leave your house. It is that simple.
As the second wave continues it is tough to see how long this virus will be a part of our lives, this new reality is
definitely taking a toll on everyone's mental and physical health. With some business owners being te
ified of
having to close their doors again if we simply can not
ing our numbers down.
Many countries have made mask-wearing mandatory in at least some public gathering places during the
pandemic, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Mexico and India. The Canadian government has
left it up for provincial jurisdictions to make such things mandatory, cu
ently, in Toronto and Montreal, it is
mandatory you wear a mask in an indoor public setting. Although provinces are not making masks mandatory
some organizations have taken things into their own hands to protect their employees and customers.
Sta
ucks has recently made masks mandatory for any individual ordering in store until they get to their seat.
"We just decided it's time for us to adopt this and require customers to wear masks across the country," said
Sta
ucks CEO Kevin Johnson in a webinar on leadership hosted by the National Retail Federation. If essential
usinesses don't follow guidelines to help stop the spread of the virus, he said, they only delay other
usinesses from opening their doors and hurt the economy. "It's just evident that it's going to help us all
educe the spread of Covid, and that's the right thing to do."
Masks are a key measure to suppress transmission and save lives. Masks reduce potential exposure risk from
an infected person whether they have symptoms or not. People wearing masks are protected from getting
infected. Masks also prevent onward transmission when worn by an infected person. With British Columbians
eing at the peak of the COVID-19 crisis it is now more important than ever to wear a face mask.
