1. Introduction
Health Promotion programmes are essential tool required to create awareness with respect to a specific health issue. Breast-feeding is a necessity for the newborn child in order to survive; however, due to lack of awareness among mothers and society this practise is neglected. As a result, neonatal mortality rate is higher especially among low-income countries. Therefore, this health promotion programme will emphasise on the benefits of
east-feeding and will aim to create awareness among mothers regarding the inclusion of this practise, especially during the 1st year of newly born child. Further, efforts will be made to present effective action plan along with the description of required resources and communication strategy to be used.
a. Importance of Chosen Public Health Issue
Breast-feeding is an essential requirement for the newly born child to survive and even World Health Organisation recommends the
east-feeding of infants for at least first six months of their life. Breast-feeding allows the baby to acquire and inherit immunity from mother’s milk. It would be essential to consider that newly born children are at a much higher risk of getting infection due to weak immune system (1). Therefore, mother’s milk provides baby with immunity and prevent against diseases. There have been enough scientific evidences to prove that
east milk contains antibodies and other components, which are essential to boost child’s immunity. Further,
east milk also contains nutritionally adequate amount of micro and macronutrients required for the child (2).
It would be essential to consider that
east-feeding itself is not a public health issue rather, low levels of
east feeding is a major public health issue. There are a number of factors, which affects the
east-feeding practice such as, lack of awareness, prejudice, social stigma that
east milk is harmful for child and other false information prevailing in the society (3). As a result of low
east-feeding practice, neonatal mortality rates increase because children are not able to survive from post-birth infections.
Accordingly, even if the child survives the neonatal stage, their immunity levels are very low and frequency of being infected with diseases might be higher to that of other children (4). This low rate of
east-feeding is also affected due to socio-economic factors such as malnutrition in mothers and lack of resources to feed mothers in poor countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and some parts of India. Infants fed with
east milk have reduced levels of diseases such as obesity, asthma, type 2 diabetes, respiratory infections as well as, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
. Target Audience for the Programme
Breast feeding practice is limited majorly to mothers and neonatal or newly born child. Therefore, major target audience would be pregnant mothers and mothers with newly born children. Further, females that are newly ma
ied and ready to conceive or planning for baby would also be a major target audience. Social factors and lack of awareness with in society is another major factor, which affects the actions of mothers and under pressure, they might not be able to
eastfeed (5). Therefore, other members of the society such as fathers, mothers and grandparents would also be the target audience in areas where there is lack of awareness regarding
east-feeding practices.
2. Health Promotion Programme
a. Health Promotion Programme and potential to
ing change in behaviour, models and Framework
This Health promotion programme will specifically emphasise upon creating awareness among target audience. It would be essential to consider that
east-feeding can reduce the neonatal mortality rate by up to 20%. However, due to lack of awareness among individuals, this information has not been made available to the mothers. Therefore, presented health plan will promote such information among target audience (6).
Likewise, Nepal being a low-income country, fails to provide healthcare support to mothers and other members of the society and false information prevails such as, the first yellow milk of mother is harmful for the child and it is thrown away (7). Rather, this health plan tends to eradicate these myths and false information through the promotion of scientifically proven experiments. It was reported that mothers who attended antenatal check-ups were more likely to be aware of the significance associated with
east feeding practices.
This clearly implies that accessibility of health services is limited in Nepal and this could be one of the major factors behind low
east-feeding (8). Therefore, presented healthcare plan will also emphasise upon increasing the healthcare reach to the target audience and this might further help to eradicate the cultural and ethnic assumptions or myths prevalent in the...
