The artistic works of Rousseau mingled the real and the supernatural worlds giving rise to a form where his own imagination appeared to be equally plausible and concrete as his perception of nature (Lee & Yoon). His artworks paralleled the wild, theatrical caricature of the poet playwright Alfred Jarry. His works as the forerunner of the modern fantasy art explored the much discussed and most pertinent question of the surrealists, as to whether and to what degree fantasy is the product of imaginative vision, a random and arbitrary invention of the mind’s eye or a remembered experience.
2. Chagall’s art is soaked with nostalgia and is associated with the memories of his homeland Vitebsk. The structures of the cubist painters forged his belief in constructive and innovative intelligence, which gave rise to a certain tension in his fantasies. De Chirico’s artworks however, actualize the dream process through a number of baffling, illogical imagery and established a connection between perspective and metaphysics. 
3. The Dada Movement was a spontaneous revolt against anything related to reason in art (Beals).
