Major Challenges Facing Police Executives in the 21st Century
In the 21st century, executives in the police force are faced with challenges that include political, ethical, and relationship issues within and outside their departmental offices.
Ethical Challenges
The American Heritage Dictionary defines ethics as standards or rules that govern the conduct of members of a given profession. Basing on this definition, police executives are faced with the challenge of determining the perspective that public members hold towards police force conduct. Generally, policing is faced with an image problem. What print and visual media such as television, radios, newspapers, and magazines present to the public in daily headline news is a true reality of what goes on within the American police force. A good example is assaults on Rodney King in Los Angeles that took place in Californian in 1991. The incidence was photographed, audio and video taped and has become an instrument used to showcase the nature of interactions that exists between the police and the public. Such events have posed a challenge on police executives in their effort to improve ethical image of the profession (Middleton-Hope, 2007, p. 4).
Most of the contacts police make with members of the public involve confrontation or crisis. The interactions made either involve an a

The public expects that police officers that fail to meet these requirements be punished by police executives. However, in the event of securing personal identity, honesty, career, and image, police executives fail to punish some police officers that do not conform to such requirements (Brown, 2011, p. 25).

The police force is characterized by a complex system, which influence administrative processes. Precisely, the reporting structure is affected by daily operations of the department. Police executives experience challenges in their attempt to effectively manage political activities within the reporting structure. In the event to achieve and communicate co
