Introduction
Communication is the way to express one’s own thought processes to another person. It can be defined as conveying feelings, emotions, views, decisions and ideologies between each other. It always involves two or more than two persons. According to Kourkouta and Papathanasiou (2014), communication for building and maintaining a relationship is as essential as
eathing for livelihood.
Along with proper medication and treatment, professionals of a medical system are required to have good communication with patients, because it is one of the most important elements in social work and all areas related to this as it helps in prevention, therapy, treatment, health promotion and education (Vermeir et al., 2015). It can help both the medical community and the consumers to make the medical processes easier, creating a comfortable environment in the health set-ups.
1. Evaluation of Areas of Strength and Development
According to an article, the overall goal of the communication in a healthcare sector is to deliver services in a way to acquire positive experience (Doherty, Landry, Pate & Reid, 2016). From the training, education and experiences, I am aware that mutual understanding is more than just conversation of words. It includes sharing thoughts by ve
al and non-ve
al communication. Respecting each individual is the essence of this. A patient or any consumer in a healthcare sector should be respected and understood with empathy, regardless of their personal, professional, behavioural, gender or economic status. Thus, empathy, respect and trust are the three basic elements of mutual understanding.
I have also accumulated therapeutic relationship as one of my key responsibilities towards my work. My understanding on therapeutic relationship suggests that it is the connection between health professionals and person or patients, which is constructed by trust and reliability. This is also called rapport. Through rapport, the patient will have a positive belief on the system and this will further help him to feel confident and comfortable about the progress of his health condition in the health sector. This relationship focuses on the demands and needs of the patients, rather than the health professionals. It is important to understand that the patients should feel independent but not obliged or dependent....
