Work Health Safety Assessment for Maintenance work at Engineering Factory
Introduction
Huffington Manufacturing Factory in Sydney, performs the maintenance and manufacturing of motor vehicle parts. The factory employs around 55 people over a site built in 1980s. The maintenance work is done in-house by the workers at the factory. The workers perform all the operations like maintaining the machinery, plant and production, while supporting the manufacturing. There are several operations in the factory occu
ing at daily basis which require effective safety measures to identify risky areas (Health and Safety Executive, n.d.). There are also the contractors hired from outside to perform repair works.
The accidents may take place during turning, pressing, grinding, sawing, bending, boring, metal working, vehicles, slip trips and electricity (Health and Safety Executive, n.d.). There are several instances of accidents and ill health cases reported every year at such engineering workshops. Most of them occur during moving and lifting goods, local exhaust ventilation, falls, trips and slips. Round 10-15% of the accidents annually occur due to use of machinery.
The revised guidelines are aimed at the managers, supervisors, engineers to pay attention to the identifiable most common hazards related to engineering machinery, vehicles, slips and trips, electricity and manual handlings (Safety Institute of Australia, 2017). These guidelines help to identify how to manage and prevent the risks.
The managing director reviewed the safety a
angements and company’s health and recognized that the factory has effective risk assessments for storage, production and distribution of the products. Though adequate risk control measures were put in place, the factory had not undergone any risk assessment for the maintenance work at the factory.
I sought permission from the MD of the factory to take permission to perform the health risk assessment of the maintenance work.
1. Identifying the Risks
· The workers are exposed to the metal working fluids, which may cause dermatitis, i
itation of the skin, i
itation of respiratory system, occupational asthma and allergy.
· There are many workers identified drinking eating and smoking where the metal working fluids are there. There should be effective policy to guide it.
· Most of the exposed workers are not wearing the chemical resistant gloves. There is high need of providing adequate hand gloves, their selection, quality, replacement, issues related to using them and provisions of workers’ training for using the gloves on daily basis.
· We also identified that the bacteriological contamination of the machineries is not adequately controlled to safeguard the health of employees. There are low instances that the regular monitoring of bacterial contamination is done using dip slides.
· The water mix central tanks and oil sumps also need to be cleaned and emptied properly. This is i
egular at many locations in the factory.
· Though the pH, stability of emulsion, concentration and temperature etc is monitored regularly every week, there are...
