Overview: So far this Module you explored the three main rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) in "The Danger of a Single Story." Then, in our Studio you began the process of critically and rhetorically reading the article you found for the Rhetorical Analysis essay. For this assignment, you'll finish your reading notes for your article and submit them with a short reflection on the rhetorical appeals the author uses. Later on, you'll use these notes to brainstorming and organize your Rhetorical Analysis essay. Step One: Reading your source critically and rhetorically. Remember back to the activities you completed in our Studio about reading your source article critically and for rhetorical appeals. Your task for step one is to finish those reading notes using a strategy that works for you. - If you'd like a refresher on annotating while reading, please review theAnnotating an Articlevideo by GVSU libraries

Step Two:Submittingyour reading notes andreflectingon the rhetorical strategies the author uses. As you take notes on your source article, be sure to point out specific examples of each of the three rhetorical appeals we've been discussing this Unit:ethos, logos, andpathos. Then spend around 25 minutes to: - locate three passages from your article that really stand out to you. These passages should also exemplify rhetorical strategies (but don’t need to be from three different strategies!).
- Write out (or copy-paste) the passage andindicate what rhetorical strategy it uses.
- Provide a short (1-2 sentence)interpretation of the passage, discussing how the passage is an example of the rhetorical strategy you identified.
- Finally, in a another 1-2 sentences, discuss how the passage would impact the purpose and/or audience. (That is: How is this an example of the strategy “working” in the text? What is that strategy's effect on the reader, and why?)
When you are done with your notes and reflection, please upload them here. |
